If you could only ask one question,

If you could only ask one question,

what would you ask?

I've been interviewing GA candidates for the past week, and there is one question that I have found particularly interesting. It reads, "You only have enough time to get to know a group of people. You can only ask them one question. What would you ask, and why?"

Some of the answers weren't too special, but there were two that stood out to me. The first was unique and interesting. She asked, "What kind of music do you listen to that you don't let anyone, including your friends, know about?" She thought this would allow people to drop the masks they wear in their day to day lives.

The second question was somewhat generic, but it still stood out. "What is your personal philosophy?"

So, I thought I would ask the people at JU:

"What kind of music do you listen to that you don't let anyone, including your friends, know about?"

"What is your personal philosophy?"

and

"If you could only ask one question, what would you ask?"

Embarassing music - 80's bop-she-bop dancy type music (think Lisa Lisa, Stacey Q, Nasty Boys by Janet, Miss Jackson if you're nasty, Paula Abdul), Backstreet Boys

My personal philosophy - you can't please everyone, so you gotta please yourself (thanks Mac Davis)kind of like Trudy's to thine own self be true but country

My question - what would you do if you know you couldn't fail? (okay so it's not really MY question but it's still the question I would ask so does that count?)

Ok, so I thought of a song I'm embarrassed about liking: "Rocky Mountain High" by John Denver - so uncool but I loved it and used to try to sing and play it on my 12-string.

Fun questions!

My answers:

1. Music - I think I have to steal Dr. Donald's answer and go with John Denver. A few of my friends would probably laugh their heads off at me loving songs like, Sunshine on my Shoulders, Rocky Mountain High and Annie's Song. Of course some of them might not even know who John Denver is.

2. Personal Philosophy - Never say never.

3. My one question: What can you proudly say that you have never done?

Classical symphony. I find it extremely relaxing.

"What is your personal philosophy?"

It's somewhat fivefold:

1. Keep it simple

2. Mind your own business

3. Do NOT give unsolicited advice

4. Avoid resentment

5. be prepared (I learned that from boy scouts)

Of course I fail at these constantly, however.

Paper or plastic? yeah, that's it. Someday I wanna retire and drive a school bus (for the insurance) and in between driving times sack groceries at a local family owned grocery store that's within walking distance from my house. And really, what more is there really to want to know about other people than their preference for paper or plastic?

Oh, and I live by this rule, "I'll try anything (within reason) twice." This mostly goes for things like food, (I actually like quail eggs), music (country is torture, but I force myself) and experiences (bungee jumping is actually fun). I don't try things like hitting myself in the head, getting shot or things like that, but everything else is worth trying twice.

Heh, yeah, that's my motto. I guess. For lack of a better answer.

Maybe having that stupid Eagle award will be worth something that way.
