Just dealt with a similar issue, although it wasn't due to an update..... Error code 41.. The drive was there, but there was a problem loading the drivers..couldnt even use the drive before windows loaded, slightly annoying to say the least..

Ended up deleting a couple entries in the registry, fixed the problem..isnt google great?...LoL

That is why I will not use the updates....99.9999995 are security updates...& at the same rate they change on my computer that I don't want changed...

ya Bichur they got you way good....You will likely have to uninstall that update...or you will run into more problems.

Just a tad bit paranoid hmmmm? LoL..C'mon, where your sense of adventure?... Dont you like puzzles?

Honestly I have only ever had a few minor issues with the updates... I will not allow them to be automatic, but I will install them for the simple fact that their purpose is to reinforce a product that clearly needs it....

I NEVER install any of the Hardware/Drivers from Windows update, now that would be just silly....LoL..Shhhhh, I did that once, swore I would never do it again...well I did..grrrrrrrr...Now I SWEAR I will never do it again!
The Updates arent evil, really they are usually a *good thing, meant to keep you all safe and warm, snug as a bug and your OS running like it was supposed to, straight out of the box...

Do what you want, but I would suggest keeping up with the updates, deal with the issues now, or face rather large ones later... your choice really...

No not paranoid...Just already went through the adventures of updates causing changes I didn't want. I have no need of updates to keep me safe though..I do well by using commonsense and good security programs as well as Knowing what the risks & updates are for keeps me from needing them to give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

The only Windows products I use is Windows itself, thus avoiding many security issues that those programs cause, and good quality programs that are researched first.

After 2 1/2 years of not using updates I have no had ANY issues ..
