v. 2 -- Don't you hate it when you get into a big argument with someone and insist that you're right and he's wrong.... and then you get disproven? Makes you feel rather silly, doesn't it? Here Solomon tells us that being prideful will only bring us shame, partly because of situations like that, and also because most people don't like someone who brags on himself all the time or who acts like he knows everything. So, if you act prideful, you'll end up looking like an idiot and not having many friends - not a real good deal, if you ask me.
v. 7 -- You go through your life, determined to be successful and happy. You play sports all through your childhood, and then you make the University of Tennessee baseball team. A scout finds you and you get drafted by the Yankees. The Yankees are so impressed with you that they sign you to a 10-year $400 million contract. Throughout all this time, you don't care about the things of God. Eventually you die and go to Hell. Will your $400 million matter to you then?
v. 15 -- There is selfishness, and then there is common sense. Here Solomon is saying, "Be smart. Don't become security for somebody else's loan. You're only asking for trouble when he can't or won't pay it off." Yes, there is something to be said for helping people out, but there's also something to be said for not being stupid.
v. 22 -- This is one of my "soapbox" issues that I like to beat on to anyone who will listen. So many guys in this world choose their mate simply based on whoever is the hottest girl they can get. Consequently, so many girls think their only ticket to acceptance in the world is to be beautiful. I don't get it. My philosophy is that you find a girl who's a good Christian and whose personality is compatible with yours and who loves you with a Godly love.... and if she happens to be beautiful, then so much the better. But beauty is not the primary thing.
v. 24-25 -- This is kind of funny to me because I think God has demonstrated it to me in a small way in my own life. See, being a server, I used to get all kinds of cool money in tips ($2-bills, Susan B. Anthony dollars, etc.), and I would always give them away. Well, at one point I got an Anthony dollar and a Sacagawea dollar, and I decided to hang on to them and not give them away. Well, that was about three months ago, and I haven't gotten any money that was remotely cool since then. (Before that time, it was a pretty steady flow.) So I'm thinking that maybe if I return to my old generous ways and give those two away, maybe it will start coming back to me
