The Terran Commonwealth

The Terran Commonwealth

aka My First AAR

Credit must be given to Aurilias for inspiring me to take on playing and writing an AAR which I never have done before (actually, I don't think I have even POSTED before on here haha). Anyhow, I hope to present my own vision of a what united Earth would be capable of, and do, in the GalCiv universe, without trampling on or rehashing over used story and plot points.

Also thanks to Brad and all the development team for making a game that I've enjoyed tinkering with so much.

GAME SETUP

Nine Opponents (all modified based on race, more on that later)

Habitable Planets: Common
# of Planets: Abundant
Abundant Stars

Brief Opponent Summary
*I edited the opponents where their political party matched as closely as possible their various Super Ability, ie the Drengin are controlled by the War Party, the Altarians by the Pacifists, and so on. Also, aggression levels were tweaked, with the Drengin and Yor being much more agressive and others less so, depending. I did not create any sort of advantage for the Terrans over the AI.*

Opponents
Holy Altarian Republic
Cirrian Star Imperium (custom race, Krynn personality)
Arcean Star Empire
Thorian Confederacy
Korx Guild Alliance
Thalan Directorate
Iconian Empire

With the formation of the Commonwealth, the founding members decided to place a function of the government on each inhabited continent (thus excluding Antarctica) in order to further the peace and trust between the people of Earth. The locations were voted on by a staggering 72%% of the member adult (over 18 years) population (roughly 2.74 billion people). China at the time was not willing to become a member of the Commonwealth and thus had no voting, which is why no Chinese city is among the government seats. While India was a part of the Commonwealth, its conceded its chances to a government seat due to its inability to ratify the Commonwealth Constitution and Bill of Rights in time for all its citizens to be properly counted for a vote. China and India were each later given the seats to four and three Commonwealth Cabinet departments, respectively.

*Earth does not have a planetary capital as it is the only Commonwealth world that still has semi-independent sovereign nation-states, such as the United States, Russia, China, and the EU. The Sol System has a System Capital located in Armstrong City, Luna (Earth's Moon).*

A Brief History of the Formation of the Commonwealth

The Third World War from 2056-2062 nearly spelled certain doom for many of the world's nations. Over 1.7 billion perished in the bloody conflict over scarce resources and conflicting ideologies. The major powers; the United States, the EU, Russia, China, Japan, barely escaped intact and many of the smaller nations were completely torn asunder. The United Nations had failed much like its predecessor, the League of Nations. Only the invention of a joint American-Japanese research team, led by Dr. Jon Dae Kim, brought hope and promise to the Human race...fusion power.

In July of 2063, China formally renounced its membership in the United Nations (though it had been a non-participant since a year before WWIII), and soon after another forty nations followed suit. On February 4th, 2064 the remaining Security Council members officially dissolved the United Nations. Soon afterwards, President Ian Bradholme of the United States and President Peter Korolov of the Russian Federation issued a joint statement calling for the formation of an united Earth government. Thus on August 13th, 2064, the Convention of Brisbane began and for six months delegates from over eighty nations drafted a charter and purpose for this new government.

The Charter for the United Earth Commonwealth was sent to the various participating states on Jan 27th, 2065. The United States and Russia, the most influential members, were the first to ratify on January 29th. The European Union soon followed suit on February 17th, the ratification process reached a majority vote on September 19th, 2065, and the last of the original convention members, Paraguay, ratified it on July 13th, 2066. Commonwealth Day is celebrated annually on the third Monday of every September (as all Commonwealth members use the Terran Standard Date, it is celebrated simultaneously on all member worlds, even if that date does not correspond to a third Monday in September...which makes for some interesting holiday periods on some worlds).

The invention of fusion power quickly revolutionized the world. It allowed for the creation of many other technologies, such as energy replication (for food) and demolecularization transportation for instant travel. By the mid 2070s world hunger was quickly becoming under control, if not eradicated and people were living more fulfilling lives.

China, while an expanding powerhouse since the start of the 21st century, had maintained its strict government control and had not yet joined the Commonwealth. It also had been one of the worst hit during World War III. But technology has a funny way of changing things, much like how the Internet drastically changed commerce and communication at the end of the 20th century. Since food production and energy needs were no longer an issue, it allowed for the ideal Communist state to emerge....however, ideal and maintaining power are two VERY different notions. A popular revolution overthrew the former Chinese government and the United Socialist Republic of China was announced. It maintained its communist ideology but granted much more freedom to individuals, since equality among citizens was more easily attainable. China was the last nation to join the Commonwealth, which it did on December 31st, 2079.

It was the Chinese Premier, Liu Bai, that put forth the idea of colonizing the Sol system to the Commonwealth Senate. The proposal was approved in late 2086 and the construction of the TCV-Apollo was begun for the colonization of the Moon, thereafter officially called Luna. Armstrong City was founded in 2089 and Luna became the first non-Earth member of the Commonwealth of Terran States.

From 2089, with the joining of Luna to the Commonwealth, to 2116, the Terran Commonwealth looked forward to future colonizing, such as Mars, and the Asteroid Belt, but first felt the need to deal with remaining social and economical issues from the previous war torn centuries. At 0342 EST on March 2nd, 2117 the world changed forever, a few moments later every member of the Senate received a call stating than an alien probe had just crashed in the Pacific about 20 miles southwest of Hawaii....

OK, so not quite what I wanted for the screenshot; but I'm having issues in getting Imageshack to show it proper size here. Ideas?

Hmmm....between last night and this afternoon, played for a few more hours, and well...I discovered who my neighbors were...I was blocked in by the two races I upped the aggression level on significantly. That in and of itself, wasn't really a concern to me, I wanted a good, give me your best shot kinda game. WHAT is an issue is when Mars is the CLOSEST habitable world to Drengi, and thus, their logical first colony. What is MORE of an issue is when, since I am in the SW corner of the map, the Drengi have colonized the worlds on the east border and the Yor on the north. So I'm stuck with Earth hemmed in on two fronts....its not looking good, though as of yet, technology has not advanced where they can invade my planet. I'm hoping to get my speed technology up to a point where i can zip a ship out past their space and into the void beyond, and basically, start a distant empire far away. Here's hoping....
This is why you should always colonize Mars. If they do take it, though, your best bet will be to win it back through influence.

As far as the Yor/Drengin situation goes, it could be much, much worse. Some tips for prying yourself out of the box:

1. Build starbases. Lots of starbases. You'll need the range boost they give you to cross enemy space.

2. Special colonization techs are your friend.

3. If the Yor and Drengin are getting to the new worlds too quickly for you, use your diplomatic edge to give them something else to think about. Namely, each other.

Thanks, but a few hours of gameplay later...well, I DID make out into the void beyond Yor/Drengin space, which is good. What's bad is that the travel time, even with the much poured into impulse engines, basically spelled my doom. By the time I could start colonizing elsewhere, the other races were definitely off to a MUCH better start than I was. For example, at the United Planets meeting I was the smallest faction (of four: me, the Drengin, Yor, and Torians (who had been very kind to me, but a lil too late) in that the NEXT smallest group, the Torians, had four times MY voting power.

Technically, I'm still alive. Now I'm looking at Earth surrounded by Drengin colonies, and my economy going down the crapper. Needless to say, I don't think President Greyson is gonna be able to win the next election haha.
Addendum: This is the first time I *didn't* colonize Mars; i dont know why i did it, i always just build three labs on it (since its not really good at pumping out ships fast enough, i'd rather have some kind of benefit overall) but for some reason, i was sure i could find a "better" world in a quick matter of time...won't be doing that again

President Greyson looked out from his window in the Executive Manor to the gray sky that was foreshadowing a day of drizzle ahead. The report in front of him was not good. New Hamburg was the latest in a series of Commonwealth holdings to fall to the Drengin Empire and it also effectively split the Commonwealth, or more so what was left of it, in half. Earth and the reconqered Mars held steadfast onto the Sol System while over two sectors away, a string of three stars held the remaining Commonwealth colonies. But it was only a matter of time.

Drengin fighters had already taken out all of the Sol Asteroid facilities and Granger Station, the main Defense Station for the Sol System.

Outside of New Chicago, the southernmost of the three outlying star systems, was a small fleet of Drengin cruisers preparing to assault the three small fighters that defended the planet.

To make matters worse, the Yor had begun a war with the Torians, stopping them from coming to our aid. Also, while the Commonwealth was not the Collective's target, that didn't stop them from taking out Washington Station and the TCV-Discovery, the Commonwealth flagship.

Yes, only a matter of time thought Greyson...

And with that thought he signed his resignation later.

So its been a few days since I have posted (and a few games later also), anyhow after the game ended (with my utter annihilation) I decided to see what was wrong. There were a few things, such as being on Suicide level for one (I did wonder how the Drengin and Yor became so powerful so quick) and research was on slow instead of normal. These coupled with mistakes on my end, well, quite simply determined the overall outcome quite early in the game.

But after starting a new game, with the intended options, by the third year (and war with the Drengin, I was winning yay!) I wanted an AAR more focused on a particular "chapter" rather than trying to tell an entire space epic (such as the beginnings of space travel to the eventual domination of the entire universe under the iron glove of one Tyler Greyson lol)

So I will first write a short summary of what "should have happened" in the first AAR and then will tell of my exploits in the next chapter...let's just say, I really like what war does to plot...

Chapter III: Fall from Grace

"Madam Vice-President, you must come with me."

Arianna Ellahan, the only daughter of a Lunar governor and a Commonwealth senator, looked up from her mahogany desk. She was tall, and lanky, as her Lunar roots would allow for, but emoted an exotic presence with her bronze skin and raven hair. Lifting her head softly, she let her hazel eyes meet the military officer in front of her.

“Immediately, Madam Vice-President.”

And Vice-President Ellahan rose gracefully from her desk in the Vice Executive Office, with the gray skies of Berlin behind her.

***

“Arianna Grace Ellahan, do you swear to uphold the Constitution of this Commonwealth, to defend its spirit and the people it is sworn to protect? Do you swear to fulfill your duties to the best of your ability under the guidance of that Constitution? And finally, do you swear to honor and serve this Commonwealth with the dignity, honor, and respect that this office entitles you with?”

“I, Arianna Grace Ellahan, do solemnly swear on the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Terran States to do all those things and with full humility for the office of the President.”

“Then I, Gerard Depardieu, Chief Justice of the Commonwealth, with the powers granted to me by the Constitution bestow upon you, Arianna Grace Ellahan, the Office and Title of President, may you go forward in peace.”

***

Greyson’s resignation had sent shock waves throughout the Commonwealth. With his departure, the citizenry grew distressed that the war now was almost to its end, with Earth falling to the Drengin Dominion. Rioting and looting broke out in a number of cities. New Hartford, a Commonwealth Colony in the outlying star group renounced its membership and submitted peacefully to the Drengin, in hopes of saving their lives.

Four worlds, that was all that was remaining of the Commonwealth.

***
About 9 parsecs from Earth
TCV-Cyclone
Tsunami-Class Small Cruiser

“Commander, four Drengin fighters on long range sensors.”

“Alright everyone, this is it, let’s try out this new armor plating. Battlestations! Lieutenant Barber, arm forward missile launcher and get the rail guns ready to fire. Ensign Yoto, execute attack pattern Delta One Eight.”

The small Terran cruiser started a direct run for the advancing ships where it would veer off in a figure eight formation making strafing runs against the fighters under this attack pattern.

“Closing in at 500,340Km….490,000Km….Commander! Two more vessels appearing out of hyperspace, unknown design.”

“More Drengin, maybe a new design?”

As Commander Jake Hadley looked on the viewer, a green beam lanced out from the new vessels and….made a direct hit on the closest Drengin fighter.

“Commander, that was a direct hit on the fighter. Its engines are disabled, sir. And Commander, the Drengin missiles seem to be having little effect on the alien ships.”

Again, Commander Hadley watched his screen as the Drengin fighters veered from the Cyclone and confronted this new threat. Laser blasts and missiles seemed to just bounce off the two craft that had appeared from nowhere. More green beams lanced out, and quickly two of the Drengin fighters were no more. The third, the first one hit, still had no engines and was venting plasma. As the two alien craft began to flank the final fighter, the Drengin’s engines flared to life and it raced off into Hyperspace.

“Commander, we have an incoming transmission.”

“On screen.”

A human in a scarlet tunic appeared before him.

“Earth vessel, I am Centurion Marcian of the Cirrian Imperial Starfleet. Are you in any need of assistance?”

and now for the news

one of our last ships was saved today by two ships claiming to be from an empire called cirrian it was maned by humans or at least human looking aliens

this reporter wants to know who the cirrian are and if they are truely human

the new president Arianna Grace Ellahan has promised to stop at nothing to regain earth

on a side note this news agency is offering 20 billion credits for ex president greyson we would make it dead or alive but it would be hard to interview a dead person so if he shows up dead there will be no bounty

further if grayson turns himself in there also would be no bounty

Chapter IV: Dark Horizons

“M’Lord, once again the pesky humans and their allies have thwarted our advances into their space.” spoke Commodore Tarkas as he lowered himself close to the floor.

Vice Lord Rakhen growled and spun on the underling “Enough! Lord Kona is sick of this annoyance, but he is not as…forgiving as I am Tarkas. Twice now, I have given you the command of a fleet of warships to either bring these pests under our control or to exterminate them, and twice you have come crawling back to me with only failure.”

“M’lord, forgive me, it is the Cir….”

“No excuses!!! You will not have a third opportunity Tarkas. Guards take this creature from my sight….Eh’Kar III sounds pleasant enough for him….and Tarkas, remember my “forgiveness”, otherwise you would be dead right now.”

And the guards dragged Tarkas’s flailing body from the chamber to board a ship to the poisonous gas world of Eh’Kar III where the toxins in the air would slowly and painfully suffocate Tarkas over a two year period.

Aurelius, Cirria
Grand Senate Chamber

“Today is a momentous day! For over two millennia we have grown and prospered on this world, away from our brethren, and we have become a mighty nation. And now, the time has come where we can aid our brothers and sisters against this evil that is spreading throughout the galaxy. Senators, I need to not convince many of you still that this is the right thing to do. We shall fight against the Drengin and their dominion, and we shall win. We will do it for justice, peace, liberty; for ourselves, for Cirria, and for Earth…We are Rome, we shall not fail!”
Authors Note: More on the backstory of the Cirrians later....also, the events in Rakhen's council chamber occurred about a year after the Cyclone first encountered the Cirrians. Earth, Torians, and Cirrians have a fragile alliance but nothing official. The council chamber meeting on Cirria, which occurred concurrently with Rakhen, is where Cirria and Earth decide to formally ally themselves against the Drengin.

The Cirrian Star Imperium is an empire spanning over twenty-four worlds who's history spans two millennia and begins in Ancient Rome. In about the year 180AD, when Rome was under the governorship of Marcus Aurelius, an advanced and mysterious race of aliens took a great number of Romans and transplanted them for reasons unknown on the far side of the galaxy, on a planet that they called Cirria. They also took Marcus Aurelius immediately before his death, cloned him, transplanted his mind, and made this younger Aurelius the Emperor of Cirria.

The aliens never made direct contact with the Roman transplants and as such remain a mystery, but they did provide food, shelter, and medical care as needed for about the first century on Cirria. The people began calling them The Protectors but after about two hundred years on Cirria, the Protectors suddenly vanished, leaving the Cirrians to themselves.

Unlike on Earth, which suffered the Dark Ages after the Fall of Rome, the Cirrians experienced no such era, and were able to continue the progress and development the Romans had accomplished on Earth, putting Cirria roughly 700-800 years more advanced than Earth.

The Cirrians at first did not know they were on another world, but thought they were only very distant from Rome. The aliens never countered this thought themselves, but in time the Cirrians discovered this as their exploration of the world around them grew more and more.

In about the year 1997 AD the Cirrians picked up radio transmissions from Earth that had travelled through a wormhole and were now being broadcasted into a far corner of the galaxy, which happened to be where the Cirrians were. With their higher levels of technology, and having knowledge of their history, they quickly realized that they were indeed from Earth themselves. Debate raged over whether to respond but eventually, the decision that Earth was not yet ready to learn of the Cirrians won out. Instead a policy of careful monitoring began.

By the time Cirria had recieved the first of the Earth signals, it had already began to spread out over its solar system and building cryogenic ships to colonize nearby star systems. It had developed near light speed technologies, that allowed for basic interstellar travel but nothing as advanced as what the humans on Earth would discover later on.

The Arcean probe crash on Earth was no accident. A Cirrian ship had travelled through the wormhole to keep an eye on Earth's progress when the Arcean probe entered the system. The probe, upon detecting the Cirrian vessel, changed course in order to investigate. With the need to remain hidden, the Cirrian ship fired upon the probe, damaging it and sending it crashing into Earth's atmosphere.

When the Human-Drengin War began, the Cirrians decided upon a policy of non-interference, but as the war waged, and Earth came closer and closer to either subjugation or annhilation, the Cirrian Senate voted to send its fleets to protect Earth, and to help the humans regain their lost colonies.

In a short one year span, the Terran Commonwealth, with the help of the Cirrians, were able to regain all of its lost colonies, and push the Drengin back.

So, a tenous alliance was formed between the Torians, Cirrians, and Earth to counter the growing Drengin threat. Eventually, the Drengin were able to subjugate a large portion of Torian space, resulting in their surrender and slavery (again) to the Drengin. Only a few small pockets of Torian resistance remain.

The Cirrian/Terran Alliance has tried convincing the Altarians and Arceans to join with them but so far has had no or little luck. The Iconian Empire has however, begun trade negotiations with Earth.

Meanwhile, the Drengin Dominion is growing in strength.

There are others still out there too...the Yor still remain a very real threat...the Thalan Directorate is a growing concern...and the Korx Guild Alliance seems willing to pay for everyone to go to war....

one little observation

since both groups are humans

when speaking about both groups the humans of earth should be called terrians

the Cirrians will always be referred to as "Cirrians" unless its a derogatory comment from the Drengin; but its something I will try to minimize confusion on, thanks!

also, i hope everyone is enjoying so far! can't say i'm getting a lot of feedback, but I will say that I am absolutely loving the reporter viewpoint from you D; its a great add, kinda reminds me of what would happen if E News was covering the big items instead of entertainment

OK, wow...its been a CRAZY few months, and I've been super busy with class and work, but now summer's here (which is our slow time at work), and hopefully I can get back to playing DA more. I was looking over my own AAR and its been so long since I've played, I was even surprised by what was going on hahaha. OK, hopefully, back in full force soon.

Unfortunately, I lost all info pertaining to this AAR and game over the summer. And besides, its been months since I've posted on it. So....I declare this AAR officially ended. I hope all my readers enjoyed what I wrote so far and would give my future AARs a good reading also. I'm hard at work creating my next one right now, which, once I'm done, I may try to upload in Scenario format since it will have many, many different ways to be played. THANKS!!! -Silverbeacher-

From Wikipedia,

"To date, no fusion reactor has come close to producing net output power"

So I'm guessing that's a no. It is still in experimental stages of development.

Do you mean fission? That we have.

sorry, new to this aar but figured i'ld get this straight. we know how to make fusion power and have made it. ever heard of the H-bomb aka hydrogen bomb? it is made by fusion. the problem is in containment. the way to make fusion power is by taking Deuterium and Tritium and slaming them into each other at a high rate of speed, aka "fuse" them, to create a helium atom and a single neutron. then using that energy from the first explosion, you can fuse two more Deuterium and two more Tritium to keep the cycle going. so like i said, the problem is not how to create it, but how to contain it. which could be over come by combining metals in a zero-gravity environment to produce a pure, stronger new kind of metal. for more info on H-bombs look up Ivy Mike or Operation Ivy on wikipedia.
