My other idea: I absorbed the Drengin, so ....

culture joins

So I just conquered the Drengin Homeworld. (plus several of its other planets).

This means the Drengin are part of my empire.

My soldiering is much weaker than theirs (but I produce a lot of troops).

I would like to see some way that soldiers from worlds homeworlds of conquered culture have a soldier ranking of their own base value + my races tech. To me, it just seems to make sense to draw my space marines from the ranks of these new worlds.

This would make sense, except the way that the game is modeled is that the people now living on Drenji are not Drenjins, but your own race. Were I to move to Japan, but there were not more Japanese living there, it doesn't mean that I would naturally become good at making authentic Japanese food.

Similarly, the soldiers that you take from Drenji are members of your own race who have resettled. They thus only have your own native abilities.

Okay. But what about if you conquered it culturally? The Drengin would still be living on Drengi.

Good point, I never thought of that. I will answer with a firm and decisive "I don't know."

Cultural assimilation, I guess. Perhaps they end up adopting your types of values and cultural traits entirely when they revolt.

I think if I conquer a planet, unless its genocide/biological warfare, there are going to be civillians. Especially if I get to keep their planetary improvements.

it only makes sense that when a particular race is assimilated into your own, that you add some of their essence to your own. Just ask the Borg.

maybe you could get a smaller bonus for each race like say if you took over the altarians from either culture or traditional or information war fair tactics you would have quite afew of them left so basicly you should get a small bonus like say 5 or 10% to research done on all of the worlds that used to be theirs or more likely empire wide since they would travel every where thus making conqureing other races through either a war not involveing terror stars or complete destruction a bit more benefisial and cultre a much more viable option also it could be a only good guy thing since good guys do take alot of minuses to planets it would be neat to lear nthat when ever they do end up conqureing some one they get bonuses since they would not genocide or inslave the people they would have people who are free to believe as they wish and keep their values as a part of their empire thus good empires would get the benefits and problems of both races as a whole since they do accept others

just a thought.

Even if there are civilians left on conquered planets it does not mean they are going to fight for you as effectively as they fought for their own civilization.

That said it would be nice to be able to model in, different cultures fighting alongside each other with differing bonuses. But the game doesn't suffer without it.

Yes, i think the game could just give you a single bonus at random from their civ bonuses if you control their capital and I would be happy.

Like to think of having the Klingons and Ferrengi contributing to the federation would boost their soldiering and mercantile at atleast somewhat.

What about Twilight of Arnor?

I'd love to see Masters of Orion style where you know how much of each population is still on a planet. We even got to manufacture androids towards the end.

I never played MOO...After several years on these boards, I'm kinda glad: It seems to have brainwashed everyone that has played it to the point where they will not full accept GalCiv until it becomes MOO.

Gal Civ is definitely the spiritual successor to MOO. There is many things to be learned from its design.

I tried to think of an analogy that where some one had taken the chess peices on a board and made up their own game to it. They have some really shiney peices and they've added dice and flipping a coin.

You come walking along and say "Hey, thats cool and all, but what if I show you how chess is played?"

"Waaaaa" they reply "I've never played chess, but I am glad I never have. Why you want to change my game?????"

You mention how that over many years the game of chess has become finely tuned and balanced in such a way that even though it is simple to learn, it is challenging to master and that it's elegant interface of a simple board and peices, there are so many moves/strategies!

He says "Waaaaaaaaaaaa.....we can't learn from the past! Why you want me to play your game."

Then I realized that the analogy fails beacuse it makes you sound like a child who can't see the value of a finely tuned, incredible, classic strategy game. You wouldn't be that, would you?

Well it does seem that when you invade a planet the entire population becomes soldiers, so if you conquer the planet you have slaughtered the entire population. (Just in so you feel bad about yourselves)

It would be a good idea to give small bonus for taking over a planet from an alien race though influence. Based on the population and race get a % bonus in something.

Arceans = Better soldier%
Dengrin = Better soldier%
Drath = Diplomatic skills
Altarian = Better research
Korx = trade bonus
Thalan = population
Torian = ???
Iconian = ???
Yor = Increase Loyalty
Terran = Increase Diplomatic skills
Krynn = Increased Morale

I would say influence for the Torians. Not sure what would be best for the Iconians, maybe a small planet quality boost.

I would like to see something like this implemented (And yes, another former MOO player. I'm playing the Psilon's - {G}) - I don't think it should be an overwhelming advantage, but contrawise, thinking of the Ghurkas of the old British Empire, I have no difficulty imagining unleashing the 51st Drengin Legion against the Drath, to somewhat better effect than my wimpy Psilon soldiers.

Not that Psilons aren't great in combat, if you can get them to put down their books anyway -

Very interesting idea...I like it. :)

Yor - I would say a miniaturization bonus instead, 5-10%
Torian - population growth 5-10%
Iconian - PQ bonus + 8% Anything PQ7 - PQ19 would gain 1 tile, larger ones would get more, but almost never more than 2. You would need at least a PQ32 to gain more than that.

5-10% would be a bit too much for each planet
maybe if it were a one time thing of taking over a different species, it would make sense

Yes, thats what I actually was assuming, not one for each planet. I didnt read the above posts clearly enough apparently. ;) It could either be when you take their homeworld, or when you take their last planet.
