GETTING HELP for GalCiv II / Dark Avatar

GETTING HELP for GalCiv II / Dark Avatar

1) IF you plan to switch between the game and something else a lot, run it in a window. You can do this via an option in the game's video settings.

(2) The game will run in any high resolution your system will support.

(3) User created data files and preferences are in the my documents\my games\galciv2 folder

(3a) The Dark Avatar preferences are in the gc2darkavatar folder in the same place.

(4) IF you run into some problem please let us know the following things:

  • What OS you running?
  • Is it English or a particular language (Swedish, German, Japanese, etc.)
  • What video card do you have?
  • What kind of CPU do you have?
  • How much memory you have
  • Your Debug.err (located in the GalCiv II directory).
  • If you're running Dark Avatar it's in the galciv2\darkavatar directory

(5) If you run into a serious problem (i.e. game won't start, crashes, etc.) there is a debug.err file in your GalCiv II directory (galciv2 or galciv2\darkavatar depending on which you're playing). Post the contents of it here.

(6) UPDATE YOUR VIDEO DRIVERS.  We're serious about this. If someone responds to this post with a "Game occasionally CTDs, here's my debug.err" and there's a video driver from 2004 in it, we'll find you.   90% of the "bug" reports we get on serious issues end up being some guy who insisted he had the "latest drivers" and those "latest drivers" turned out to be 2 years ago.

(7) The game should run on pretty much any system that supports DirectX 9C.  YOU MUST HAVE DIRECTX 9C or later installed.

(8) There are some first generation Intel Extreme adapters that don't work with the game.  We're talking very old ones (i.e. <2003).  They don't work because they don't support True Type fonts in games. Nothing we can do. There's no work around other than to get another card.  Based on the beta, this shouldn't be an issue as nobody ran into it.

(9) DO NOT use this thread to ask whether the game will work on your system. If you have doubts, wait for the demo. If you can play any other recently released game, then you can run this.  (last time we put a thread like this up we had people with monster machines asking if they could run the game on it).

(10) IF THE GAME CRASHES ON YOU we want to know why. In Stardock Central in the "free stuff" area there's a program called Smart Exception.  Install that, run it, and if the game crashes, it will create a log that will tell us literally what line of code it crashed on.  Email [email protected] or [email protected] the file and we will take a look.  Don't forget to tell us what you were doing when it crashed to help us figure it out.

(11) IF the game is crashing when it saves (i.e. corrupted save game): Check your virtual memory settings.  You can do that by right-clicking on my computer, go to properties, click on the advanced tab, click on the performance settings, ciick on advanced, click on the change button in virtual memory.  Make sure your virtual memory is set to at least 2 Gigs.  The game won't use all that of course or anywhere near but we have found that those who run into this almost always have either no page file or very low memory.

(12) IF YOU ARE RUNNING ON WINDOWS VISTA. Be aware that the graphics drivers are still in a state of flux. Particularly the nVidia drivers (I wouldn't even consider using Windows Vista on an nVidia based machine until the driver situation gets better which I expect it to be by the end March 2007).

(13) NVIDIA 79xx series video card users, particularly those in SLI may experience freezing. If you do, turn on the hardware mouse cursor in the options. If that doesn't solve it, run the video card in single GPU mode.  Keep an eye on the nVidia drivers being updated and report any problems to nVidia.  I should know, I'm running two 7950's in Quad-SLI mode on my main machine.

(14) AMD DualCore. Make sure you have the latest bios for this if you run into any problems.

(15) The minimum resolution is 1024x768. If you aren't running at least that, the game won't work.

Good luck!  We'll be checking this thread regularly.

PLEASE only post if you're having a problem of some kind.  Thanks!

I just bought GalCiv II and it crashes right after selecting the races im going to play against, right before the game actually starts.

I have all three games on Impluse.

Is everybody having the same problem?  Please tell me your hints and what you have been telling people on how to fix this crash then if that dosen't work I will try Smart Exception.

I can play ToA just fine but the other two crash on start up.  When I first got the games, they palyed just fine but with the patches and upgrading my CPU to windows 7 and ATI 4770.  Are the games too old now, to play?:')

Try this (or this one if you have 64-bit windows). Save the file and run it, agreeing to merge when prompted.

Thank you so much for posting that Kryo.  I am getting back into GalCivII after a few years hiatus, and this bug was driving me MAD on my Windows 7 64-bit machine.

For me it was the exact same issue.  Crashing as soon as you finish your opponent race selection.  I installed the 64-bit registry entry that you listed, and the problem went away immediately.

Hi

I purchased Galactic Civ2 Ultimate Edition on Impulse just yesterday and I can't even start either Dark Avatar or Twilight of The Arnor. However I can start the first game, Gal Civ 2 just fine.

My Debug post for both with Dark Avatar first.

Go to My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar (or GC2TwilightArnor as appropriate), open the file prefs.ini, and make the following changes:

Change
DisplayWidth=1024
DisplayHeight=768
ColorDepth=32
Fullscreen=1

To
DisplayWidth=(Your desktop width)
DisplayHeight=(Your desktop height)

I am having trouble getting any GC II to load.  I execute the game via impulse or directly in the program directory.  The game immediately crashes, and I cant even get to the main menu.  I have the following debug.err log.  I  updated my ATI display drivers last night.

This fixed it for me.  I do hope a patch fixes this shortly as this is not an intuitive fix and you'd generally have to be told what to do to fix the problem.

I just bought GalCiv2 Ultimate off of Impulse.

I'm getting constant flickering. The ship models all flicker. So do the effects in the background. If I turn off enhanced ship rendering, the ships stop flickering, but I can't get the backgrounds to stop.

I'm running Windows 7 x64. I have an SU7300 processor (1.3GHz C2D), 4GB of RAM and Intel GMA 4500MHD. Certainly not a powerhouse, but it should be enough to run this game, and it exceeds the system requirements. There doesn't seem to be a debug.err anywhere, because it's never crashed.

Reply #137 Top

There doesn't seem to be a debug.err anywhere, because it's never crashed.

It should be located in your MyGames-folder, or better said, in one of the 3 subfolders that belong to the UE. The debugg.err is always created whenever you start a game, it should be there even if your game didn't crash.

Reply #138 Top

The game creates a debug.err file every time it is run, regardless what happens. You will find it in the game's folder under My Documents/My Games.

Reply #139 Top

Sorry, found it.

Since your drivers are already up to date, try disabling enhanced ship rendering in the video options.

Like I said, that does fix the ship flickering, but does not fix the backgrounds flickering (the "nebula" looking stuff). Also, why would enhanced ship rendering be causing that for me? Does it need a more powerful graphics processor?

Reply #142 Top

Try setting Background Nebula Density to 1. (Personally, I find the background nebula's to be a distraction. I always set it to 1. It saves memory and proc power, and I don't have to look through so much garbage to actually see the game.)

And yes, you may simply have a weak GPU. It may be newer than the game, but that does not mean it is up to the task of running full GC2 graphics. Mobile chip sets are, by their very nature, weak in comparison to a dedicated video card. And the Express series are always at the low end of the spectrum.

Heya, I just downloaded the GalCiv ultimate pack from Impulse, but can't get it started. My computer ran the demo just fine. My system specs are as follows:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Video: NVidia GeForce GTS 250 (Driver Date: 4/3/2010)

CPU: Intel Q6600 2.4 @ 2.64 GHz

4GB of memory

DirectX Version: 11 (Although I have downloaded 9.0c to try and run some other games before.)

I get the following error message:

Your video drivers may be too old to run Galactic Civilaztions 2 properly. Installed video drivers must support DirectX9.0c...

The message had a blank for my driver date (which, through device manager is 4/3/2010, and the version is: 8.17.11.9745)

And the debug file:

Have you modified the windows installation with any "optimizations", given that DirectX cannot report the driver information, and even the OS is misreporting ("Windows Professional" vs 7 Ultimate)? Such things can sometimes cause unexpected issues. This will be beyond the scope of common issues that can be resolved over the forums in any case, so please contact [email protected] for help with your issue.

Like I said, that does fix the ship flickering, but does not fix the backgrounds flickering (the "nebula" looking stuff).

If nothing else, you can disable the background textures entirely (there's a slider, just set it to 0 and that should do). Intel chipsets emulate a lot of functions via the CPU and as such can have trouble with certain graphical techniques.

Thanks for the quick reply! I don't think I installed any "optimizations". However, when I first try to run DxDiag, I get a lot of errors and no information. However, if I "Run 64-bit DxDiag", all of the information is reported and correct.

There was also some point where I directly downloaded DirectX 9.0c to run an older program, which is the DirectX version reported in the debug file, instead of 11, which is what is reported in my 64-bit dxdiag.

Do any of these two pieces of information help at all?

I will also contact support, thanks very much for your help.

Well, I'll try disabling the nebula stuff. I'm just surprised, considering GalCiv 2 is nowhere near the most demanding game I've run on my PC.

I have just installed GalCivII Ultimate on my new computer and it will not start and I hope someone can help me.  I have had the game for years and love it and really would like to continue playing it.  If I try and run the game from the GC2Launch the top three quarters of the screen flashes two or three times and then goes black and the only way out is to run the Task Manager.  The same happens when I try and run the game from the Twilight folder but strangely when I run it from the Dark Avatar folder (GC2DarkAvatar) it works!  When the game fails to start I don't get a debug file but the details of my computer are as follows;

Computer - Alienware M17X-R2; CPU i7-X940; RAM 8 GB; 2x HD5870.  I have tried running in both Crossfire and single card but the same fault exists.

Win 7 64 bit Professional.

When the game fails to start I don't get a debug file but the details of my computer are as follows;

Make sure you're looking in the correct folder under My Documents\My Games--if it's getting far enough to flash the screen, there will be a debug.err file.

Most likely though it's just a resolution issue, since DA works--if you set the resolution to match your desktop in the prefs.ini files for DL and TA, (you may also need to set fullscreen=0), that'll probably do the trick.

Thanks kryo.  I ammended the pref.ini and now everything works fine.  I did have a debug file I was just looking in the wrong place :) Thanks again.
