Please tell me more about these these things you call "scores"

OK, I'm finally in the late stages of my first Metaverse game and I'm worried that I've got myself in a win-for-me that I will not be able to post or that will earn me some embarassing icons at the bottom of my forum posts.

I was doing really well "leading from behind" with an alliance win as my goal. The Terrans were dominant for most of the game but also my first ally and they never allied with another AI. I've been ranked 3rd since mid-game and 2nd for quite a while.

My alliance web is almost complete (I do have a secondary campaign to take the Altarians through influence). Quite a few turns ago, the Terrans declared war on one of my allies (Drengin, lower-middle ranked)and I paid them off before any shots were fired. Now, after having forgotten to check details on the Terrans for too long, I find them well on the way to a Tech win.

Which leaves me with a couple of questions.

1: Could my diplomatic dominance and the fact that the Terrans are my longstanding ally have made them switch victory goals?

2: What happens to my Metaverse score if I "lose" because my ally leads the way to transcendence?

You still score points for a loss, but of course not as much as a win. I'm also sure you're aware that different victory types give better or worse scores.

So anyway.

1) Probably.

2) It still counts as a game and you do get some points but not as much as a win.

My advice. Declare war on your so called "allies" and take them out before they can achieve their goal. Also in the future, it's a good idea to simply disable victory types that you don't want to occur.

I *always* go for the military victory but that's just the kind of guy that I am. I disable Tech wins and Influence victories, but leave in Alliance victories because I can be in control of whether or not it occurs. However so far I've never offered or accepted any alliance.

As far as the "embarassing" icons, I believe there's no such thing. Playing for fun is the utmost importance, the score can add to that fun if that's what you like, but score alone isn't enough. From my point of view I respect and appreciate your participation regardless of score.

Besides, weren't you the one that posted "Does the Metaverse need people who don't care about scores" thread? IIRC the predominate answer was yes.

Thanks, Mumble.

Yes, that was me. I almost posted there, but I figured I'd start a new thread b/c the answers over there are why I have a whole set of questions now

So far, the only times I've done that are to turn off tech victories b/c I found them too easy for me. I started this game with an alliance win in mind and I hadn't yet seen an AI ever make a serious play for a tech win.

Turning the option off to stop the AIs seems like waxy, tasteless cheese to me. But hoepfully I've learned my lesson and won't forget to pay my click taxes and keep a closer eye on the top tech AIs.

Depends on the galaxy size and tech research rate. The bigger the galaxy the easier a tech win can be. Obviously, the slower the tech rate the harder a tech win can be. I usually go with gigantic and slow and usually can get a military victory before someone could get a tech win, but on some occasions if I get a little bit slower start I could have been beaten by a tech win if it had been enabled.

In any case I feel that these are legitimate play style choices. I personally find the transcendental ascendance of an entire race to some invisible higher plane of existence cheesy in and of itself. Seems to me if they were so all knowing they could stay around and kick your ass first just to demonstrate their superiority.

BTW congratulations on the new Veteran status. In my opinion you're deserving of Diplomat status, but since they've stopped serving the champagne and caviar in the Diplomat and above area there's really not that much extra benefit in it.

Depends on what "all" they know . But you almost make me wish I was a formal lit scholar. I wonder if some grad student somewhere has built a database for Transcendance in SF that would show how common takes like GCII's are when compared to your ass-kicking idea & mid-range stories like Star Trek's Q characters or the "ascended ancients" in Stargate TV shows.

Doh! I hadn't noticed that yet.
