Proverbs 5-6

Well, chapter 5 has rather explicit content in it, and I want to comment on some of that.... so I'll mark it as "Adult Content"
5:6 -- I'm not exactly sure what this verse means, but here's one possible interpretation: It's very easy to look at a person who lives promiscuously and think, "Man, he has all the fun! This whole one-man-one-woman-for-life thing is boring." But such is not the case. We don't know how unstable their lives really are. I'm quite sure it isn't all fun and games, even regardless of their final punishment at God's hands. Ultimately, following God's plan results in the happiest life.
5:9 -- Think of all the people who have sacrificed their "years" at the altar of sexual licentiousness. I get so sick and tired of hearing things like, "Make sure you only engage in protected sex while you're on spring break." No! The way to keep yourself from getting AIDS or some other STD is to avoid the behavior! Condoms don't even work all that great. Once again, God knows what He's doing, and we don't have much right to complain about the HIV epidemic when we're running around doing whatever we want with our bodies.
6:1-5 -- Now here's something that we don't even think of in modern society. It's common practice to co-sign for a loan that someone else is taking out, which basically means that you have to pay up if the person who got the loan can't do it. Well, here's an example of some practical advice from Proverbs: Don't do it! What happens when the person can't (or won't) pay back his loan and you get stuck with it? And it's really not even wise to say, "Well, he's my friend. I know he wouldn't do that to me." Verse 1 says, "if you become surety for your FRIEND".
6:6-7 -- God has provided us with an almost limitless array of object lessons in nature. Think about ants - not exactly the smartest of all creatures. I don't know much about insect nervous systems, but I can tell you that ants' brains (or central ganglia or whatever they are) have VERY limited capabilites. And yet God has programmed them to act in such a way that provides us with a lesson. I find that very interesting.
2:10-11, 16; 5:1-3; 6:20, 23-24 -- It has always struck me as being sort of odd that Solomon continually says, "Keep my commandments because they will protect you from wicked women." (There are other reasons given, but that seems to be the primary one.) I guess it's because (especially for men) temptation towards sexual sin is probably the strongest temptation. The best way to avoid that sin is to dutifully study God's wisdom that He's given us in the Bible.
