Thalans remind me of something

I just finished reading Ender's Game, and i noticed the "Buggers" are a lot like the Thalans: Incectoid reaces, hive-minds, and a little on the mysterious side. (Not to mention, they're both ugly!) Has anyone else noticed this?

I did, but tbh I think there's hardly any claim possible to primeness of the concept of insectoid, hive minded aliens. They are probably as old as rosswell, and like their thin limbed gray spoon-eyed friends part of the public consciousness

Not to mention that Ender's Game is a terrible book.

Its queer, but quite original. I kinda liked it
The sequels were too implausible and generally over the top and IMO should not be bothered with.

It's all right, not the best book ever written, but the battle room was an interesting concept. Ender's Shadow is much better and more interesting IMO.

And that's your opinion.
Anyway, I'm willing to bet whoever it was that thought up Gal Civ (wasn't it Brad?) had the Thalans before the Buggers were well known.

The first appearance of intelligent, alien insectoids, was in H.G. Well's "The First Men in the Moon", published in 1901. He called them 'Selenites'; they lived in a hive society in an extensive tunnel system beneath the Moon's surface. It was made into a movie in 1964 which I highly recommend seeing. Ray Harryhausen handled the special effects, (for any of his fans out there.)

I think if we want the person responsible for making insectoid races popular as far as aliens are concerned, H.G. wells is a good starting place, but you also might take a look at Robert A. Heinlein and his Starship Troopers book (note, NOT the movie movie, the BOOK) which was subsequently completely ripped off for the use of starcraft by blizzard, and the rest is history

Don't forget the Zerg! I love watching those guys explode into pile of goo.

My favorite insectoid far and away is Zorak, in Space Ghost. He's my hero.

They also remind me of the Klackan (sp?) from the MoO games.

The Thalans remind me of the Drengin or the Drath or the Dreadlords, or certain minor races, whenever i look at the minimap!

The Thalan's are pink on the minimap. The Drengin and Dread Lords are red. The Drath are orange-ish. There's a difference.

I believe his point is that they are Not distinctly colored, they can be confused if the color differentiation of your video system is not absolutely clear, or if the ambient light in the room interferes, or if you are the slightest bit color-blind, or if you are tired, etc, etc.

The Thalans remind me of the "bird-like reptilian" creatures in the old sci-fi movie, perhaps it ws called "At the Earth's Core". I can't recall the lead actors name, but he played in a lot of "B" Sci-fi movies. Anyway, the creatures were the "rulers" of the core world (untill the "humans" start to revolt. By the way the book, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, was much better.

All posibilities, but i think the main reason for the problem is the size of the minimap. The smaller the object is, then the harder it is to distinguish the colors. If i had a metre square screen size then i guess i wouldnt have a problem?

I think only the Dreadlords and the Drengin have identical colors. Some minor races appear to have the same colors of majour races as well (especially the Thalans).
