Twenty-thousand troops to increase US forces for Baghdad - ? What will that achieve against an unconventional enemy that just has to
wait outside of the Green Zone and other parts of Iraq waiting for a lull moment before pouncing back and begin decimating American soldiers in their unguarded moments? What do these 20,000 US forces do against several centuries of Shiite vs. Sunni sectarian conflict
that went on unabated throughout the years of American occupation of Iraq ? This troop surge will just show the world that Pres. Bush doesn't " cut and run" even if he himself admits to mistakes on the Iraq War, (not to mention the mistake of launching the War unilaterally, to begin with) even if it means more than the 3,000 plus American lives and national resources already sacrificed. Sure, we bought (and are still buying)into the myths of "if you don't fight them there, we'll be fighting them here" spin even if common sense tells us that the reason the US had not had a major Al Qaeda hit since 9/11 is because this time we thought about hardening our defenses here at home, not because we have an ongoing War in Iraq. As soooo many correct-thinking Americans have gradually deciphered for themselves, our President has brought this country into this sinkhole where the remaining options are pretty hard to swallow. Now the same doomsday arguments are put forth to justify this increase without any assurance that there will be an end to it and the US will not further sink.
"Plus-ups,,,augmentation.." whatever the operative word may be, we're still faced with the same dilemma - Is this "song-and-dance" routine (listening to a bipartisan Study Group.. listening to the Joint Chiefs.. listening to whoever..) then justifying another troop increase ,
another ruse to say later, "OK, Iraq, we gave you a chance, but nothing happened, so..."(what? we leave?) or with a little hint there ("defend
the Iraqi territory against interference from its neighbors") a ploy to increase conflict with Iran so the pretext of invading Iran or even taking out its nuclear facilities can come into play without thinking about the US Constitution, much less Congress?
Yeah, why not? We let him get away with this before. Why not now? It's Bush all the way.. It's just a couple of more years and we ought to give Pres. Bush his last shot to a legacy and fame before he makes his way out. We'll just chorus the same motherland / fatherland statements there is to spin until we believe it ourselves.
Anybody ever thought of what would happen if we invaded Iran? Did you ever think our invading Iraq would end this way? I did and my previous blogs since the Iraq invasion tell you why. I don't need to crow about this but with the same seriousness when it was happening
then, I think we better not open this door of "troop surge" at all. If you want alternatives, there are many I have offered in my previous posts, I would daresay, more intelligent than the policies that have mishandled this War from the start and none can even be classified as "cut and run".
Now what? Where do we go from this hellhole? We just grind our teeth and take it because the real War hasn't come to us (yet).
Sometimes I think It's not the troop surge that is a little, too late. I think it's us.
