Custom Races

Am I missing something or is the custom race tab almost meaningless. Each race is highly customizable, almost to the degree that they can be made to be homogenous. There is some mention of inherent bonus that are lost if one customizes that ability but it’s not easy for me to see how that applies. It seems to me that each race, along with the custom race, gets 10 ability points to pass around. Some things such as logistics won’t be quite the same. Home world size is different for two races. Yor gets miniaturization.

What do you guys do?

Essentially, you get more bonus if you adjust a 'core' race to your liking than you do if you create one entirely from scratch (an incentive to use the core races and see the per-race dialog texts more than anything).

The difference is more significant in DA; Core races get more free abilities, and they are stackable with picked abilities. However, you cannot change the core race's super-abilities. Custom races in DA have no free abilities, but they get 5 extra pick points and can choose whichever super-ability they like.

I just use the custom race because I like having 9 AI opponents as opposed to 8. It makes tech trade whoring easier. =0 I build 1 lab the entire game...ftw.

Inherent bonuses are key to getting the most out of your race selections/customizations. I've gone into detail quite a few times on the subject. Check out my posts #5 and #6 in the following thread.

Mumble I just read your posts on the race creation tips and OI think I'm going to give it try. I've found that the Torians have been a good race for me in the so I'll try it with you suggested mods and let you know how it goes.

So let me get this straight. If you play a custom race, then all 9 core races are in the game as well?

Exactly.
