Weapons/Defenses

Though I now have some experience with this game (e.g. I can beat the comp at both normal and challenging), I still have trouble with developing my military effectively. Sometimes I fall dangerously behind, other times I develop some weapons but sometimes they aren't as effective as they should be. Also, there are a bunch of weapons to choose from and I'm still uncertain if I should specialize or try to balance them out. My current strategy is to have one primary set of weapons and a secondary set, but its time consuming researching them all. Any hints please?

It's best to focus on a single line of weapons. You'll get more pwoerful weapons faster. I only go a second route later in the game when I'm up against an opponent that has adapted to what I already have.

I agree with DethAdder. You should also understand somethign about the weapons themselves. Missles do more damage but cost more. Mass Drivers are cheaper but do less damage. Beam is about middle of the road.

If you have beat normal and challenging you probably know this already but just in case you don't, try to atk with weapons that the AI is not defending against and defend against what they are attacking with. If you don't want to spend a bunch of time upgrading back and forth between atk and def you can but a bit of each def on you ship. I don't reccommed doing that for atk though.

Edit: Grab a military resource or two. You will be amazed at what they can do for your ship stats.

I agree with Fuels and he agrees with Deth.

In the early game you should be able to get a good idea of who you are going to be taking on in battle first. Once I know who I am going after, or who might be coming for me, I start spending my money spying on them, so that I can see which direction they are going with weapons and defenses. Very rarely do I start building my military before the AI so it works for me. Once I know what they are doing I focus research on one weapon type only and a defense that counters their weapon type.

Usually within the year, I have them on the ropes and am ready to put them away.

However, keep a close eye on the other civs as well, and if need be, once you have the first war near an end, you may want to revamp your defenses depending on what they are using as primary weapons.

Thanks for the advice guys I really appreciate it. I tend to like either beams or mass drivers so I'll focus on that  .
