fleet composition

I was just wondering would it be possible to have standard task force template. the reasoning goes like this:
you create task force template - number of ships, orders, positions (if possible). then after battle you click on a button and reinforce that task force to full fighting status, of course, you have to wait for those reinforcements to arrive, but you get the idea.
also it would work well with creating taskforces. something like moo3, but slimmer. set up a point where task forces are created, say how many you want to build, wait till your planets crank it up and voila, no such thing as manually setting each vessel to task force.
that way you don't have to constatly change production of planets to different types.

So basically you design a ship template, and then your planets automatically pump out a new fleet/replace damaged ships in a fleet and send them somewhere? That sounds like a useful feature. Lots less micro for building.

Then again is a fleet ever really "done?" Do you hit a certain size where you say "ok that's enough" or do you want to keep increasing it's power as resources allow? I believe that there is a way to automatically send new ships somewhere ("dynamic rallypoints" is the term they used I think) so a simple build queue combined with that feature might accomplish what you have in mind.

Great idea though if you DO have a discrete fleet size in mind.

then again you *could* set it by percentage, and growth factor. say:
I want 300 ships
20% _____________ 30%________________ 15%______________ and 35%________________

I dont know why you would want to define a size, i personaly would like to keep it flexible with the ability to divide fleets into several smaller ones, to say secure planets i captured or such.

so that micro is reduced. put simply.

that was the idea. name templates like "system defense" or "attack squadron" whatever,
then to expand the concept, combine variouse templates into one big, but so that each and every element could be separated back into original template.
or make even system template. Example: I want for each and every system to have minimum defences, important systems should have more defense and frontiers should have all else.

Hmmm, I don't think there'll be a lot of use for it. Dynamic rally points, either on a ship or on a fleet, will solve the problem. You can just take the extra second to que up the number of ships you want.

remembering grouping will be more of an annoyance then a blessing, as you would want the ships on the right to go to the right, not the ships that origiannly made up task force A.

I like the way Obi Mark described it. This way you wont have to spend prescious time organizing your fleets over countless systems and instead spend time in a much better way.

not on this scale. your dealing with hundreds of ships, not a few dozen, like in HW2.

From the screenshots it looks like the average fleet might consist of about half of a hundred(in the big battles). So far the biggest fleet is that of the Vasari when they warp in and that looks like a few hundred ships. Also the TEC have a good amount at the beggining of the video but they all look like the same ship.

that was earlier on in development though.

And it was a cinematic trailer that may not be representative of typical gameplay.

Yes, but it was done in game so even if they remove or add something it should still be modable since it should still be there, or could be made again. Though it matters how the game is coded, but i know little of modding anyways.
