I replied to Col. someone or other on another blog and he was doing the usual cry baby thing about how we are losing the war and it dawned on me that no one has bothered to hold the Congress feet to the fire. Congress sets the limits and troop levels. If we need more troops to deal with the world why don’t they increase the troop levels of active duty personnel? It would not be hard to do and in the long run it would be more expensive to use reservist than to add another division. This is the fault of the President and the former Secretary of Defense in my opinion all they have to do is ask and no Congressman would dare say no. If we don’t do this soon we will end up with a draft that will kill the war effort and destroy any gains we have made.
I think it was all the people saying we need more troops that cornered them into a bad position. Yes, we need more troops but we can only fight with what we have and all we have available are the reservist. If we added another division of troops in the army and another division of marines we can rotate them in and out giving more that two years between rotations. We should never have brought our forces down to such a low level after the cold war. We used to have a million troops including reservist now I doubt we have half that many. The problem is that it will take five to ten years to bring it fully on line and most people think that four years is too long to fight a war destine to last fifty.
Any thoughts on the subject?
