Tasking ships?

I do like the idea of ships tasked with goals - A game called STARS! (yes all caps) Had a feature where you could set ships goals like "Attack from Maximum Range", "Attack from optimum range", "Attack for maximum damage", "Do not engage", "Retreat if engaged" etc... This was really nice as you could set multiple priorites (I think it was 2 per ship) which allowed you to setup "Attack for maximum damage" which would target the most damaged ship and destroy it and then setup a "retreat if damaged X%" which made it simple to save the maximum amount of ships - It'd be nice also to have a fleet option that went "Retreat if fleet strength >50%" or a "Retreat if Fleet to Hostile Ratio 1:3" or some such that way fleets would attempt to not fight an obviously lost battle.

I know that fleet captins can be given specific orders however will they be as functional as who/what to target and when/where to retreat? Also could there be an issue to designate a fleet as a reinforcement fleet that would automaticly move to engage a battle that is on equal footing?

Yeah would be nice to "auto" reinforce a fleet.
Lets say i have:
My main fleet
and 2 smaller fleets

1 of smaller fleets is on to explorer some planets in a solar system, and the other is at my homeplanet. My main fleet is attacking a planet, but needs some help. So it would be nice to be able to set up my 2 smaller fleets to reinforce the main fleet if needed.

That sounds like a good concept, Glavius. Even if they don't include that much depth to it they might be able to set it to scream at you if one of those conditions is met. "Hey you! Fleet Delta is outnumbered 3 to 1!!!!"

An auto retreat would be an excellent idea. It would be wasteful to have ships suicide...unless there are suicide damage ships

It has been stated that you can set tasks for individuals captains of ships and then i think you can set goals or "targets" for the commander of the entire fleet to follow.

hmm, numbers don't count for everything.
Didn't Fragile Allegiance have the retreat option for either XX% of fleet is lost, or Fleet is overpowered XX:1 ?

I believe it calculated it in resources present in the fleet, of course, with every race similar but for the skins and models, that's simply.

Also, I wouldn't want my fleet running from me, shouting out that 'Fleet alpha overpowered' would be a nice feature though.

There will probably be messages notifying you of most of the procedures the AI would take on without command. And i am also pretty certain that they will allow us to overide AI set commands.

but it wouldnt take into account such things as race differentials. ex: the vasari may be outnumbered by 4 or 5 times, but still be more powerful than the opposing fleet.
Most likely but that ratio cant be too big, even though they are powerful they havent really done any new research in their exodus.

bah, who needs research when you can bend time and space around your pinky finger?

I think they have lost that ability... they have to use their whole hand now.

bah, stupid multiverse-destroying explosion (or w/e killed the vasari empire...)

... I guess well never know what killed them, a lot of the sites say it was a tactical mulfunction. But, i dont get how sending your whole army to destory something you dont know about is being un-tactical *sarcasm*

like hell.
obviously this is going to be a huge part of the story plot. probably what the next game will be based on.

That would be really cool if they added expansion packs going through the story of each of the races, first how the humans united in to the Trade Order, then how the Vasari fell and some of the races they killed in their exodus, and finally how the Advent found their way back to Trade Space and the problem with their material crisis.

screw expansion packs
just make new games!

and besides, they already pointed out that this is going to be part of an "epic series"

Yea for "epic series".
