No internet in beta?

from the faq

Q: What game formats will be supported?
A: While this will be determined in part by the popularity of potential formats in the pre-release online beta test, we expect at minimum to support 1v1 and small scale free for all game formats.

so, unless i'm misunderstanding there will be no online games in the beta?

he pre-release online beta test

ONLINE beta test. Where are you getting no internet from that?

I guess we all make mistakes at one time or another. Yeah, it does mean multi-player/online enabled, but, in addition probably help them (to whatever end) in keeping out unauthorized or unruly testers.

My understanding is that the first beta (the one supposed to be out in January) will not have any online features but later ones closer to the release date will.

it would be rather pointless for them to have no multiplayer in the beta. it should have multiplayer still just in a limited format.

I think it will be limited just like stated they expect a miminum of 1v1 for online so there will probably be other restrictions.

The first beta will be single-player only. A multiplayer version will come in the second beta a few months down the line playable via LAN and Internet.

yarlen i am hoping that the multiplayer beta will allow 2v2 on a small scale... it just allows people to see how the team function will work and what not.... a lot of poeple are concerned about the team functionality like myself....

indeed...a 2v2 minimum atleast...this game is on such a massive scale and one of the biggest things is multiplayer and not alot of people do 1v1s these days when they can drag a buddy from his sleep to tag along for some meaningless bloodshed in deep space (or anywhere else for that matter)

So the first one is SP only.
What are the limits on maps, game modes, races, AI...

well thats fine with me....i tend to prefer single player these days anyways with RTS because i have more time to sit back and watch the fights than having to fight some 12 year old in a clickfest in multiplayer. im not as fast as i used to be and i have alot more distractions around my gaming environment than i used to a few years ago...i cant exactly compete anymore with the click-fiends

We haven't determined that yet.

Multiplayer testing won't start until the Spring.

Frankly. No multiplayer=bad game. Multiplayer delayed=bad game.

Even Supreme Commander's beta was only multi. I am still not convinced this game will be what say Homeworld players hope for.

Well, it makes sense if you think about it. The first beta will be just singleplayer so that any problems with the engine itself can be worked through. Then, once that is ironed out, you throw in the extra possible issues that come with online play. Divide and conquer.

If you're apprehensive that Sins won't be up to par then don't pre-order it. The rest of us will have plenty to say once we get our hands on the beta I'm sure. If it sucks then you'll know not to waste your money. But if we think it is good then you can make your decision based on that. No worries.

The game is going to have multiplayer, it has been stated by both Ironclad and Stardock. It's just the very first beta phase will be SP only, with multiplayer likely coming in the second phase a few months later.

No one has claimed anything even close to there not being multiplayer, or multiplayer being delayed.

If you're planning to release multiplayer capabilities in a 2nd phase of beta testing that is schedualled to come out a few months after the release of the 1st phase, will the single player that comes with the first beta allow player vs. computer outside of a storyline?

My only concern is without both, the game may become a bit old in the gap between winter and spring. A lot of gamers tend to have the attention span of a moth with new releases...

well most single player demos (and betas) tend to have a small storyline mission and maybe a tutorial. they also tend to have a player vs cpu skirmish mode available also so i highly doubt ironclad will not include these features as they seem like the type of people that they want their testers to get a full feel for the game.

Atm im beta-testing for suprem commander. And its only multiplayer, no skirmish, no tutorials, or any story of the kinda too. And even though its just multiplayer, its very fun to play and test

I think it will be the same with SoaSE

The sp beta will be sandbox mode against the AI. We haven't determined anything more than that for now.

haha..yea..the supreme commander beta is fun..and i like that you can view replays in it too...i just wish though they had a vs ai mode but i understand that they dont because the beta is suppose to be their stress test of their online service and code

What about DarkStar One? Or Dread Lords?

Not nesecarily just multiplayer make the game more interesting

im glad its just a sandbox single player, dunno how id react to having the whole story laid bare, even if i preordered. Honestly i am a little worried ill get used to the game and not care to play it by the time it comes out.

wow, so you're going to have the AI done before the MP aspect? kudos to the devs.

What would be really usefull in the Beta though, is the ability to spawn non-controlled or AI controlled units and builings in a sandbox game. And a small piece of advice, Don't overpower the AI (looking at you Supcom! haven't won a single skirmish)
(wait...you can start a game in supcom vs just AI?)

your thought on the spawning ai though....can you explain that some more? im slightly confused what you mean by being able to spawn non-controlled units
Reply #24 Top
When a player leaves the game the AI takes over.

Yeah they are hard, but if the player leaves at start of the game, the AI is no problem, either in late game though
But i guess it depends on how you play

I think that what he means is that he wants to be able to 'create' an enemy ship of any type where-ever when-ever he wants. This is cool for testing and labbing because it allows you to easily create a scenario. Say, "what would happen if I went up against this type of unit with one of these?"
