Question about the asteroids

The asteroids say they are producing industrial production points. I was wondering if this is a boost just to production, ie ship/improvement building or if it can also transfer as research points. I wanted to find out if it is feasable to boost your tech capitol by reassigning a large group of asteroid mines to it. I know the focus will transfer some points from other categories to tech, but is this an efficient use of asteroids? Thanks for any thoughts on the matter.  

btw I already would like to nominate DA for expansion of the year 2007. Awesome game!

Asteroid mining bonuses don't appear to be redirectable via focus as normal production points are. There are some other types of asteroid bases in the code (including research, IIRC), but they're disabled right now. I'm not sure if the devs plan to re-enable them later, or limit the bases to industry only.

To my non-coder's eyes, AsteroidFieldMiningBaseModules.xml suggests some inclination to making asteroids work like the candy-colored resource mines. If the plan was to have different asteroids valid for only one of the paths in that XML file, I hope there's still a chance for implementation.

But I have a completely different asteroid-related question: will the autopilot code be taught how to drive around asteroids when a ship has enough movement points to make the detour clearly worthwile?

In my current 1A game, there are plenty of situations where ships on autopilot throw away *multiple* turns of movement. I have an asteroid field immediately adjacent to a couple of plants, and ships will actually *launch* into it if the colony rally point is in the right direction.

I sure hope so. As it stands now, when I set a ship on auto I have to check the route and work around the Asteroids. Treating them like the resources would be great. Only miners could occupy the same space as an asteroid for building purposes.

I've been learning the hard way that route-checking will always be necessary in some games, regarless of whether autopilot gets asteroid-awareness.

If you have production worlds with the Yor between between them and your colony rally point(s), you'll need to manually go around if you want to use all your speed over 3.
