What's that drumbeat I hear? Dems and the draft

Rangel keeps pushing military service class warfare

Uh, I thought that the Democrats were out there trying to convince everyone that it was President Bush and the Republicans fault that the draft was gonna make a comeback...

Apparently, since that plan never flew, Charlie Rangel, incoming head of the House Ways and Means committee believes that the "means" part is all about being mean to as many people as he can.  Or, perhaps he believes -- as he stated on Face the Nation this past weekend (11/19/2006) -- (paraphrasing) that military service continues to be an unfair burden on the poor and downtrodden in this country in disproportionate numbers when compared to "the rich."

Rangel is back with a plan though, as he again is trying to bring up a bill to reinstate the draft so that *all* able bodied citizens of the appropriate ages would be forced into service.  Funny that a Black congressman would be reintroducing a bill that basically enslaves the youth of the country even as we continue to have one of the best militaries in the world with an all volunteer force.

While our military may be stretched thin, there are other ways of resolving the issue of adding troops if necessary but those ways would seem to involve tossing money at the problem (something that Democrats normally believe fairly strongly in).  Of course those ways aren't good enough because if we just pay huge bonuses to people so that they enlist and serve then the only people we'll get (at least as Democrats believe) will be undereducated or poor persons that have no where else to turn.

Rangel, Kerry, the whole club.  They all believe the same lies and myths about our military and they all try to perpetuate and benefit from the same.

The sad part is that I agree with Rangel about one particular part of his supposed reasoning here.  I personally believe that all young people in the U.S.A. should provide service to their country in some way.  Not necessarily militarily, but in some way.

Perhaps the answer is that all young people should have to endure basic training, even if they don't have to be indoctrinated into the military, and aren't forced to meet physical fitness standards nor forced to fire weapons and go through training in the use of gas masks and being subjected to taking a nice gulp of "gas" as military people are forced to.  Maybe the answer is for the military to come up with a "basic training lite" that all U.S. citizens go through so they gain a better appreciation of military life and just what the people that serve the country go through.

With that all said though, I don't think the answer is a draft.  Drafts are never fair, and invariably "outs" are created that get people excuses from service.

Yeah, this I find uber strange.

It really goes against their so called stance.

Go figure, politics...

It isn't strange. A draft causes immediate unrest against the government at colleges and among other young people. It happened during the civil war, it happened during ww2, korea, and Vietnam. Especially Vietnam.

What people AREN'T saying is that this is really a push toward the 2008 elections. There will be two more years for kids to become voting age between now and then, and it is possible we'll still have forces engaged around the world then. If they can keep pushing they'll cause a great deal of angst toward any administration that is pro-war anywhere, for any reason.

It's not that strange and it really doesn't go against their stance -- see my comments here:

Both meaning the same basic thing -- the Democrats continue to try to use the military and service in same as part of their class warfare politics.  They believe that the military benefits from service by people with no other choices in life.  That's a myth that has been debunked multiple times, but one that continues to go around in Democrat circles, and one which they continue to try to benefit from fanning flames on.

If they can convince the public that only poor people, rednecks, hicks and others without choices in life are the ones that are dieing in the military than they can continue to promise those same people that they'll be their saviors, and their protectors.

Worst case they believe that they should be able to make sure that the sons and daughters of wealthy families should be used as human shields for people that are more inclined to join the military for whatever their own personal reasons.  They flatly and bluntly state that forcing families like Cheney, Bush, and others to send their youth into the military will make those families less inclined to get us into wars and conflicts.

Possibly, but then again it may just as well keep our leaders from making the right decisions for the long term because of this extortion and blackmail.  Instead of solving problems now we'd just delay them until perhaps it is too late to do anything to stop a threat that was growing all along.
