"Sauron" was nothing special, he was just one of the maiar. Had the Istari been allowed full use of their powers, Sauron wouldn't have been able to stand against them.

In fact, if the elves of the third age weren't all utter wimps, they should have been able to kill him in a 1v1. Feanor's kin could have taken him without blinking.

Also, that song is awesome.

Marcathonas - let's not get into a Tolkien debate... But by the Third Age "Sauron" or "Gorthaur" (earlier "Thu") had changed a lot since Luthien sang down the tower and freed Beren or Huan fought him as a were-wolf. Of course it's true that Elendil and Gil-Galad were able to overthrow Sauron in personal combat, albeit at the cost of their own lives. Unlike what Peter Jackson shows in the movie, the Silmarillion seems to say that Sauron was "thrown down" before Isildur cut the ring from his hand:

"But at last the siege was so strait that Sauron himself came forth; and he wrestled with Gil-galad and Elendil, and they both were slain, and the sword of Elendil broke under him as he fell. But Sauron also was thrown down, and with the hilt-shard of Narsil Isildur cut the Ruling Ring from the hand of Sauron and took it for his own."

If you put a bullet through your head that will probably take care of your problem.

Embrace the Dark Side, Mumble.

I had just gone on a rant about Microsoft in the "When is the download available" thread, when I saw the topic and just couldn't resist. It did seem like an appropriate solution to the problem.

There is strength in the dark side, so to speak, and anyone that denies it's presence is only fooling themself. But that doesn't mean that one should allow it to rule them or you shouldn't strive to channel the power towards good.

I have to admit that I can be very corny, but there is truth in the above sentiment.

Did anyone else notice that both Sauron AND Sarumon(sp?) were servents of Aule before they went the bad guy route? Aule can't hold onto his 'minions!' Perhaps its their role as creators that breeds a sense of pride, and a sense of power over the natural world that corrupts them...
