Stealth weapons?? (Or is AI cheating in combat?)

I am just fighting againts another civ and their fighters have an beam attack strength of 3 (no other weapons, no starbase support, no atacking civ bonus and no military mining). My ships have a beam defense of 7 (including starbase support). Now from tome to time during a fight those nasty fighters create 5 hit points damage with a single shot in a fight 1 ship against 1 ship. How is this possible?? I thought the worst thing that could happen would be three points of damage (they roll a three and me a zero). Is the computer cheating or are there some "undocumented features", which would be interesting to know about - or is this a bug in the software??

Thx for any help - (I also want this surprise hit feature for my ships , how can I buy it? )

i read somewhere that the luck racial ability increases critical hit chance.

that was the only mention i've seen around here about critical hits, but in most other games critical hits do double damage, or 50% more damage.

just a guess that they might have hit you for 3 pts, scored a critical for 6, but you defended with a 1.

like i said, just a guess... but it makes sense.

Luck ability influence many things in game...

Thanks / Danke for your thoughts. Anyway I am posting this now under bug reports to get something like an official explanation.
