Wake Up Call for Bush and the GOP

November 7, 2006 clearly shows all those polls about HOW Americans did not support Bush and the GOP policies were correct! Exit polls show this election was about Iraq, security and the economy. The problem for Bush and the GOP is that the majority did not agree with the policies Bush and the GOP were following and want a change.

Proof that Americans want a change is evident by the decisive win in the House both in numbers and the fact that many long term Republicans were defeated and the fact that the Senate may also end up in the hands of the Democrats could not be clearer. If, in fact the Senate is controlled by the Democrats, even though only a small number of GOP seats were up for reelection, is very impressive for the Democrats.

Now what should the Democrats do with the control of Congress?

Make tax cuts for Middle Income Americans permanent.

Repeal the tax cuts for oil companies and redirect that $12 Billion to fund alternate energy production (wind, solar and clean coal to steam electric generation plants).

Institute new Café standards for higher gas mileage for cars, trucks and SUV’s.

Repeal tax cuts for the wealthy and apply to balancing the budget.

Establish a plan to BALANCE the federal Budget by 2010.

Develop specific plans to help people without health coverage to obtain insurance.

Re establish a Check and balance on the Executive Branch.

Fund No Child left Behind and provide help for paying higher education costs.

Secure the border and require ALL containers to be inspected.

Change the budget process and require ANY new spending to be fully funded.

End Earmarks and require ALL appropriations to be subject to Congressional debate.

In Iraq urge the President to adopt a policy that will turn over the security operation to Iraq and look to the Baker Commission Report for specific suggestions on how to disengage. The stay the Course Policy that Bush has been following for 44 months is not acceptable to continue.

Increase the Federal minimum Wage.

True, the lesson learned is, next time, don't play "get a long" games with Democrats... Appeasement to appear strong never works.  The Democrats won because the Republicans never did come off as strong leaders.  They were too busy making excuses for not getting the job done.

Compromise does. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with compromise. It's when the "my way or the highway" mentality gets going, by whomever...then things get screwed up.

Gee ColG, you think we didn't hear you the first time?

Seirously, I don't know...if the democrats do their job, and such....then I'm happy.

Anyone that does the job they were elected to do is good in my book.

The democrats won because the Republican base punished the GOP, not because of anything the democrats have done. This was hardly a major victory and you are already advocating for the usual liberal stances...higher taxes and punishing businesses. But now col the democrats have some power, and will have to be accountable for their actions. Although I doubt we will see any posts by you criticizing them.

Maybe, just maybe people wanted the democrats to be in charege, and not because they were punishing the republicans?

The only reason I am actually happy is that now when the democrats screw up I can throw everything you typed here back at you.

My suggestions continue the tax cuts to those that NEED the tax cuts and use the tax cuts from Big Oil and the wealthy to help solve our problems like the deficit and energy independence. If the Democrats end up with control of the Senate, it is a major victory.

Make tax cuts for Middle Income Americans permanent.

I'm confused, I thought you said there were no tax cuts for the middle income people. I thought you said only the rich people benefited from any tax cuts from Bush. In order to make these tax cuts permanent, they would have to exist in the first place. Are you contradicting yourself again Col?

You're a funny guy, you're the only "Republican" that I know that is happy the Democrats won. I know many Republicans who felt that change was needed and are OK with the Democrats having control of Congress and even the Senate, but they are not jumping of joy for it. You, on the other hand, if you could would scream in Bush's face "Wake Up Call for Bush and the GOP". This is no shock, everyone knew this was coming and it's a good thing. Especially for us American people. We finally woke up and decided to make a difference, not by voting for the Democrats, but by showing that we are the ones in control and that if we don't like something we can change it at will.

I will say this, I will give the Democrats the benefit of the doubt that they will actually work together with Bush and will do what they are suppose to do and not try to get revenge against Bush and the GOP. We need people who will work for us, the American people, not for themselves. Just like I gave respect to Bush because he is my President, regardless if I agree with him or not, I will give the Democrats respect. I can only hope they will be true to their word and not turn their backs on the people like the GOP did.

Keep in mind Col that just like Caracarn1 said, be prepared to have all your articles thrown back in your face if the Democrats fail. You got what you wanted, be ready to pay the price if they screw up.

I NEVER said there were no tax cuts for the middle income taxpayer. Those are YOUR words. However about 1/2 of the total dollar cuts in taxes goes to the top 10%. Those are the tax cuts that need to be repealed and used to help balance the budget. The Democrats need to make the 10% bracket, child care credit, elimination of the marriage penalty, increase the point at which the Alternate Minimum tax takes effect and the lower rates on ALL but the top two tax brackets permanent. If Bush veto's that the Democrats should attempt a Veto override and document ANY and ALL Republicans that vote to sustain a Bush veto for the 2008 Election.

I am pleased the Democrats won because the GOP has turned its back on the vast majority in our country and are now a party that has passed laws that spend money we do not have. They have engaged in nation building. They ignore existing laws and have turned their back of Americans when they need help like Katrina. The GOP has taken political patronage to an all time high and pork has NEVER been greater. The GOP EARNED this loss by their policies!
