Replace Icon in a File

Is there a straightforward way to use IconDeveloper to replace an icon in a large file, e.g. shell32.dll, with a different one? I tried for quite a while and couldn't do it. I was working with a file on my desktop, not trying to directly edit a system file.

Thanks very much for some info on this.

Hmm, I don't see why you couldn't just create your own 32 x 32 icon (or whatever size you want) and add that format, then select it to use. Other than that, I didn't see any way of changing the actual icon without editing it in a graphics program. But I dont' see the logic of this if you have IconPackager...

...if you do have IconPackager installed, or don't but are an ODNT subscriber, I would install it. Then select file > New Package > a gallery of the default icons will appear > scroll to the icon you want to change > then save your package. This will allow you to still utilize the default Windows icons, while viewing your changed icon. And it's not a permanent shell32.dll hack.

I've probably missunderstood your question so forgive me if this is the case.

IconDeveloper can't do this, nor can any Stardock software. IconDeveloper is for producing icons, it's not for hacking files!

XN Resource Editor or ResHacker can replace icons in resource and program files.

Oops! I should have checked the date before posting, but since it looked like one of the more recent posts I presumed that it was recent.

The answer still holds true though, so maybe it will be useful to somebody else sometime.

Only came back to find if there was any hope of IconDeveloper importing SVGs for icon creation, but I can't find anything to suggest that it's even been discussed anywhere.

I'd email [email protected] and reference the URL in this thread.  Maybe the ID dev will respond here with any information available?

I have not heard this mentioned before as a possibly supported type. Unfortunately, it is not likely to be supported as Adobe (the creators of SVG) is no longer supporting the file type either.
