I Still Want My Flying Car!!!

Recently, I sat down to watch some Star Wars with my oldest son. In the movie, which I am guessing most are at least vaguely familiar with (any episode), they always have scenes in which their cities, which are always so tall and vertical, have cars that fly all around the buildings.

Watching it I started to think back when many were dreaming of the day of the flying car. When I was a boy, people would predict that by some date (most of which have passed) we would be cruising in the air in our cars.

But is this even doable with a world full of terrorists?

Let's assume someone can come up with technology that enables us to fly in our cars. Would that product ever see the market today? Think about it, a flying car, or a squadron of them would make great missiles for suicide bombin terrorists.

As I was watching the episode, I also started to wonder why no car ever seems to hit any of those grossly tall buildings. even by accident. There are no drunk drivers in that place far away and long ago? There are no angry ex-wives where the force is in force? There are no old people confusing the brake for the gas where the Wookies roam?

It's too bad that al queda has ruined flying cars for the rest of us. Cause I still want one. Especially everytime I find myself in a traffic jam.

you are on the right path as far as understanding the question. sci fi and fantasy are genres. but star wars is neither of those.

i'll hold posting the answer so your friend has an opportunity. i'll give ya a hint tho...the answer is in the beginning of the 1st movie (the orig. Star Wars).

don't fret tho, most people get it wrong...i did when someone asked me for the 1st time. that's what makes it a good trivia question.

ok,,,here's the answer...Star Wars is a fairy tale. the setting is outer space, but that doesn't make it "sci fi" as that genre is future based.

the beginning of the movie (a long time ago, in a place far away...) is one of several variations of the way all fairy tales begin. also, the story is that of a princess being rescued from an evil villian. the hero is a pauper who is really a prince...there's more clues, but i think you get the idea.

there was a report a few weeks ago where they "cloaked" a micro organism or something. i don't remember the details, but i'm sure trekkies got off on it.

related, there was another story where they actually "teleported" a small organism about 1/2 meter.

those are just "baby step " type advances, but imagine where that technology might be in 50 years.

and imagine how the bad guys might use things like that. a terrorist "beaming" right into the president's bedroom to assasinate him (or her). or walking in cloaked to assasinate him (or her).
