Upgrading Ships

Im still new to this game so im still learning. I was wondering if I could upgrade ships with more weapons and sheilds and so forth. I go to the Shipyard and do upgrades but i get a message that says i cannot do this to core ships. So if theres anyway to do this that would be great.

Yes, make your own ships. You can't touch core designs, but you can upgrade designs you make.

And don't use the core ships, ever. The only ones of any value are the trade ship (which doesn't need upgrading), the constructor (although I never use core, too slow) and the defender for having at least basic defence on every planet.

or you can upgrade the core ships and use a different name or add a number to it

Be sure you've got the latest version of the game. In the original release you were not allowed to upgrade the core designs. As mentioned if you do upgrade say the Colony Ship you've got to give it another name. Also there are several in game named ships so sometimes you may hit upon a name used by the devs and won't be allowed to name your new ship the same. Beyond that there is no limit to what you can upgrade provided you have the space available on the ship hull.

SInce the game saves your designs is there a way to reset the list so that only the core designs are left. When I'm lazy or under the gun I tend to design ships that are dull or just wastes of space so I want to get rid of them all.

If you want to get rid of all non-core designs, just delete all the files located in My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\ships or My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\Metaverse\ships, depending on which one you play.

I think I understand what he's running into.

You cannot name your custom ships the same name as a core design. So you're upgraded Battleship will have to get a new name like Strike Battleship, Command Battleship, or Battleship II.

I've had Light Cruisers, Escort Cruisers, Strike Cruisers, Heavy Cruisers...

All kindsa naming gymnastics to get around the core names.

I'd be interested in finding out the favorite designs & upgrades that players are using.

Lotsa speed, not too much range, heavy point defense, and LOTS of beam weapons.

Aliens have a major jones for missiles because their power levels are higher much earlier in the game.

I tend to name my ships something like an animal "Mako" for an assault destroyer for instance "Eagle" for a scout etc. plus a variant number Mark 1, mark 2, mark 3, etc. as I gain new tech and modify them.

In the description area of each ship, where the game automatically puts things like "Up and at em!" I put what class it is, Assault destroyer, heavy cruiser, dreadnought, etc.

This naming convention helps me remember what ships are at the current peak tech level, and which ones can be upgraded.

Anyone know if you can upgrade your Flagship? I've tried every type of design (small/tiny/medium/large/massive) and it won't let me upgrade it.

It sucks, because the ship has great experience from finding anomalies that raise experience...

The flagship can be upgraded to any other medium design.

What do you have to do to get awards to show up underneath your account? I have awards but they're not showing...

Go to the 'edit my characters' page in the metaverse, and click the 'default' button next to the character whose medals you want to appear with your posts.
