Join ongoing MP game

Like in Swords of The Stars, you can join in an ongoing game.
Will SoaSE have this option? would be a cool thing, as it could change the outcome of the game

Ofcourse there should be an option to turn it of or on as one chooses when setting up the game

And if this option is available, can you explain abit about it?

I believe Blair has said all players will need to be present at the game's start.

If a player has to leave, will an AI take over their empire or can they give it to an ally?

AI takes over. And Kryo's right. No joining after game start.

yup, I think this was handled more than a few time on the old forum.
but still, If there was an "invaders from space" mode where a new player would get one outer-rim planet, that would be pretty sweet

although there would have to be restrictions to keep a clan from getting 20 people all on at once, for instance an alliance ban.

i thought it was like this:

there are 4 players at the start and you can chose if other person can join a slot. during the game.

so you start: some1 leaves and in the beginning you chose if someone can take over the place of the AI in the game.... :S or something like that

but that would mean some people would have to sit on a standbye mode, thats boring.

He means that there is a setting so that if someone leaves, than another person can take over for the AI that took over, not a spectator or waiting list from the beginning.

this was discussed on the old forums... the devs were discussing that they would be able to get it so you can join an ongoing game.... but i am not sure if they ever got around to doing it sooooo....
the way it would work though is if a palyer dropped the computer would take over...
again it was talked about but no confirmation on their part...
hoped this helps

yes, I caught the mistake I made, I read "will" instead of "can"
changed the whole context of the sentance

Can you change player via giving savegame files for multiplayer games?
Like PBEM or something?  Not sure how that would even work in an RTS...

Well, Yarlen, they have already said that a multiplayer online game can be saved and resumed at a later time. It doesn't seem like too much of a stretch for a different player to take over the spot of a player that couldn't make it back for round 2. I think that is what P5y was getting at.

I can just see a uber 1337 player stepping in on a n00bs behalf, that would be really funny...

The developers mentioned how 'recording games' worked a while back, which allowed the commands player made to be stored. In this case, I think it may be possible to merely record the game up to the point where you wish to 'break' and save it for a later date to be resumed. I'm not familiar with programming, and I'm sure it's all hard in itself, but if it's doable I'll be really impresed.

Only the host will be able to control this function, though. Unless he drops, in which case the computer replacing him can not do it. In that case it should be transferred to Player 2. I'm guessing that is how it will work.

at the end of the day the need for saving multiplayer games is a must especially if games can last over 3 hours. sods law always has one player who cant make it to the next round. If the only way to transfer to another player is for that player to give his savegame file to another it gives a bit of control to who replaces whom. If I had to leave i would give my savefile to a similary skilled player so the game remains fair

well and if you don't give it to a same skilled person it wouldn't be a problem because he does sit there with YOUR build up. and i don't yhink that anyone has the same build up as one sertain person has....
still , its better then just playing a game 1v2 with a missing player

which allowed the commands player made to be stored

as in, I can see what my opponent is exactly clicking?
SWEET

...
unless you mean, I can see what I've been clicking only... thats redundant

I'm pretty sure it has to be everyone's commands, because that is how the replay videos are done. I think they will encode it for your sake.

well, I think that will officially debunk any problems for noobs
