Guild Wars Night Fall or Factions

My 10 year old is playing Guild Wars and we are enjoying it.  (Uh, did I say we?  Heh.)  Anyway, I like to watch him play.

His birthday is coming up in November.  I can't decide if I should get him Guild Wars Factions for his birthday or Guild Wars Night Fall.  He seems to think Night Fall will have a lot of lag.  I don't understand why he believes this and can't question him too closely without giving away his b-day gift.

So if anyone plays either of these....I believe Night Fall is coming out this month....so if you get a chance to play it....I'd appreciate any feedback on lag, server problems, etc.  For either Factions or Night Fall.

I don't play Guild Wars, but one possible explanation for why Night Fall will have lag is that whenever new stuff is released for a MMORPG, the sheer number of people checking out and playing the newly released material creates a ton of lag. This lasts until the newness wears off and people go back to playing all the content and not just the new stuff. Happens in WoW all the time. Whenever they release something new, tons of people rush to check it out and the servers can get laggy trying to deal with all the players gathered in the new areas.

I use to play Guild Wars and the last expansion. I even tested Nightfall. Nightfall is pretty much more of the same. The only lag you should worry about is on your end since server side lag is unavoidable. But from what i've seen, this shouldn't be a problem. As far as picking between Faction and Nightfall, it really depends on taste.

I would probably get Nightfall just because I like the new classes over the classes they have in Faction.

He said something like this but I wasn't sure I heard it right.  It doesn't make sense to me.  If they know lots of people will be playing, why not plan for that?

This is exactly the reason he wants Night Fall, but is "sure" there will be lag.  There isn't lag now on his regular Guild Wars, so I'm not sure.

HAHAHAHAHA.

Yeah, I think he'll like it.  Guild Wars is a pretty fun game. 

He's trying to get all his buddies on, a few of them are.  Most of them play WOW, and well, I just don't like that game.  Not for my ten year old.  I can't put my finger on the difference, but it is significant.

Every game has it's share if immature idiots and jerks. When you have 7 Million players (and that's the latest set of numbers I've seen), even a small percentage of total players ends up as a LOT of people number-wise.

I let my 11 year-old son play WoW, but with severe restrictions - He can only play when we're home or playing with him. He's only allowed to talk in Guild Chat (of which I'm a key member and his mom's a member, too) and only groups with us or other guildmembers. Any questionable activity that's displayed around him gets checked out by us and reported if necessary. We even let our 8 year old play. With him, it's under even STRICTER restrictions (no guild membership, no talking to other players, no grouping with others, play time is restricted and availability of play time is restricted, and we're even more draconian on what we'll tolerate around him). As an autistic child, it's helped him expand on his problem solving skills, eye-hand coordination and his spelling.

Given all of that, and a parents involvment in the entire process, it's nothing harmful.

Yeah I think with parental involvement like yours, you are right.

The few months he played WOW I noticed much more profanity and inappropriate talk among members...maybe it was just the time...it seems like most of the people he plays with on GW are about his age....I don't let him give any personal info out at all except his name....

I don't have to stand over his shoulder, I can do laundry, check on him, do dishes, check on him..stuff like that.  We have a hard fast rule.  Only game talk, and ANY profanity and he has to move along.

So he joined a guild where there is no cursing or you get booted.

I think we are finding our stride.  To me personally GW is better to sit and watch than WOW...heh...but that's just personal taste.
