You need to create a character... what the?!? am i dumb or is it?

Hey all,
I've created my account and player and all that seems to be required online. Dowloaded and installed stardock. But whenever i click on metaverse in the game menu, i login and it tells me to create a character so i can play. So i do this, go back in to the game, and the same note come up! 'have to create a character to play'. don't know what to do - even reset machine...
some help would be lovely....thanks.
