Poetic Justice

THE LOWER HOUSE

When people say you've gone astray,
The best thing's just to run away
And let your lawyers tell the press
That booze or bad priests made this mess.
It's not enough to clear your name,
But, hey, why should you take the blame
When all the big shots made no noise
And let Mark Foley play with boys?

For those who claim high moral ground,
A scapegoat's ready to be found,
And if it isn't demon rum
Or childhood pervs who pinched your bum,
Then give Karl Rove a little time
And he'll fit someone to the crime:
Satanic sponsors of gay rights,
Or soft-on-terror Clintonites.

Some voters, true, will think it's odd
That those who preach the wrath of God
Should turn a blind eye to a queer,
But things change in election year.
At other times, gays go to hell,
But now the rule's "Don't ask, don't tell" -
In Washington, why pay sin's wage
When there's a chance to turn the page?
