How do you use the web to get known?

I'm what you'd call a novice blogger. I've signed up for several blogs, none of which really get the attention they would deserve if I wanted to have the maximum number of people see them and become interested enough to either check back or add me to their RSS reader.
I have been paying particular attention to the types of tags or keywords I use in order to maximize the number of hits I get on Yahoo, Google, etc. For the most part, though, traffic has been less than awe-inspiring.
I'm using a combination of my own web-site, wordpress.com and a bevy of other blogs that produce limited traffic.
Anyone have some grande ideas they've used to get their blog (or blogs) more frequently visited and responded to?
