Planet Types

Hi. I was hoping if someone, perferably someone from Stardock, could enlighten me what the types of planets will be. So far, I know there are:

Toxic
Barren
High Gravity
Aquatic

What else is there?

And another important question would be:
What X race can populate Y planet?

The real question is, will we be able to colonize every planet using the new system. Anotherwords, will it replace this wierd numeric habitabitabily rating system where virtually everything is 0, earth-like is 10, and paradise 26. If you could use ice planets (normally at 3-4) with some technologies like earth-planets, it would blow this system right out the window.

In such case, I suspect that gas giant colonization would come very late in the colonizing tree, or not at all, but I have to admit I'm a bit intrigued at what it will do, especially to the terraforming technologies/neutral benefit.

Will we be seeing both systems at once? Why the heck would you research ice planet colonization for those size 3-4 planets, when you probably can just invade the hapless AI's worlds after they do it for you.

I hope that it just copies the Space Empires IV game (I'd bet that this is where the ideal comes from).

Seems daft to have a "toxic" planet type as I'm sure that it wouldn't be "toxic" to all races!

In SPIV we have Rock, Gas and Ice planets. You'd start out being able to colonize one type - but could research the others - but it did take a lot of research points to research the others (and you need to research normal techs or risk falling behind the other races). It worked *very* well.

Space Empires V is due out soon (the demo is now available) but I have not checked it out.

There's been nothing good for ages - now we have GalCiv2 & SEV all in one year - both using 3d interface - I'm in heaven!

When is the Dark Avatar pack due out anyway?

Yor - Barren
Iconians - Toxic, Aquatic

All other races can colonize only the defalt planets, whatever they may be.

how will custom civs work? Ya i know they might throw the option in the abilities section hopefully. Just wondering

It's just about techs -- each civ will start with a necessary tech to colonize one (or maybe more) planet type. For custom civs, you'll add that starting tech to your civ creation.

You will be able to colonise all planets if you research all of the environment techs. Until you get the tech for Ice worlds you cant build a colony on an Ince world.

I don't know if you will be able to invade an existing colony without the tech though, I'm guessing you won't be able to as your troops wouldn't be equiped to fight in the extreme cold.

The Planet Quality (numeric) system is seperate to the planet type. PQ determines usuable land area for construction, not the composition of the atmosphere etc.

As for why would you research an environment tech for a low PQ world - you probably wouldn't. The point is you have to decide which course of action will help you more. Do you research Ice tech or Toxic tech? It will come down to which worlds you have discovered and how good they are. If you don't want to spend time researching a tech for a PQ 4 ball of ice you could either trade for the tech or just ignore the world and go for something else.

I don't think so. The planet type seems to be in addition to the current system, not a replacement. The PQ will show the amount of space available after the right tech is researched. If a planet has a PQ of 0, no one will be able to colonize the world no matter what techs everyone has.

I thought the Torians were supposed to be aquatic as well. At least their civ description rattles on about how the planet is made of so much water yada yada yada.

Odd. It seems that source has been deleted.

Have these been confirmed?

will we be able to at least claim worlds so that our enemies can't grabbed the one's we can't use.

I doubt it. Should make the influence game a bit more interesting.
