Windows wont stay nonstupid. Serious help needed.

Okay, So I reinstalled XP, wiped my hard drive, put XP with SP1,2 on there. Everythings great. I get to the username screen, pick mine, get to the window. Install the drivers for my cable modem, check to see its working, it is, great. Dandy. Fudging Sunflowers and tea. I run windows update to get everything up to code, then I think about installing Kaspersky Antivirus and some other utils i like. The screen Hangs on the Windows update window while im looking for updates. the green bar, i Clicked get custom updates or something, that doesnt work, so i choose High-Priority.

Doesnt work.

After a few minutes, i manage to install Microsoft Update. It sucks too. Then, no new program will load. Windows Media Player, a new Windows explorer window, nothing.

I cant shut down either. shut down, restart, logoff, the window comes up to select, but when i do, it just goes back to my wonderful lovely angelpie in a rainbow desktop. I dont know what to do. I havent put anything on here that didnt come on my cd. I reinstalled windows TWICE today alone and it happens each time. I have no problems with wiping and reinstalling again, so any, ANY, help is greatly appreciated.

ya know, ive always had a theory, windows update is evil.... thats why i dont use it. i downloaded all the important updates i need a while back such as sp1, directx, advanced networking pack, etc and i never have to worry about windows update.. but anyway.. it could be the service packs doin that to you. Ive had many problems with service packs when installing them off of windows update. One thing you could do is put XP onto a new cd and incorporate sp1 or sp2(whichever you use) onto that same XP CD that way when you install xp it will install your service pack also.

just a thought... Best of luck to ya

This cd already has sp1 and 2 on it. and on further pulling out of hair, I managed to download and install 2 small updates, but when i restart, my comp hangs at "saving Your Settings" in the bluey start-up screen. and after i cant open any progs, the whole thing freezes, then in like 9 minutes, everything goes alright and any programs i clicked on, open then. I have to mash alot of buttons to get this to happen though.

Just a thought...your XP installation disc may be bodgey. I bought a brand new copy for my wife's machine recently and could not get it to behave properly after 7 clean installs. For example, I got a couple of 3rd party programs to install okay, but then everything went downhill from there. When it came to a number of Microsoft and other programs, they just wouldn't install, no matter what I tried. Apparently some MS programs (others too) require specific scripts/codes, and it seems there were some missing or corrupt codes on that particular installation disc, thus preventing the installation of necessary programs dependent on them.

Eventually I gave up and rang MS, who advised I should take it back to the store for a replacement, which by the way I did and now evertyhing works 100% seamlessly/without issue. According to MS and manager at the store of purchase, it's an extremely rare situation but it does occasionally happen, so if yours is also a new disc and presenting similar problems, I suggest that you enquire about getting it exchanged ASAP.

Yeah, the disc isn't exactly... straight. But the problems all stopped two or three days ago. As far as I can tell, there wasnt any clear reason, just.. stopped being stupid.
