Good ship configs.

hey all.

I know that a ships config all depends on your opponents techs, but does anyone have a configuration that they always stick with and think is the bee'z knee'z?

Smaller ships with decent speed, no defense, all offense.
Large ships with good defense and moderate attack. Used for defending my planets passivly. I guild a large hull with all engines to get it to my non-factory planets and upgrade it on the spot.

Good question; Regardless of what happens, I tend to find if I can design and build a small hulled ship that can do 20+ damage, and the rest with engines, with the goal to keep the manufactoring cost down to something that my planets can mass produce quickly. Henry Fords adage, "Quanity is its own Quality" seems to plays out again and again in this game.
I never build a small hulled ship with a top end weapon- To me, the return for sticking that kind of weapon on a ship that will die in the first round of combat defeats its purpose. As long as it can get a shoot off and either seriously damage or destroy its target, I feel my investment is well payed for.
As for large, and huge hulled ships, I tend to stick enough guns on it to do 50-70 points damage, 4 engines (So I can use it to intercept invasion fleets to begin with) and the rest defense. later on in the game, those ships well be upgraded into 70 attack/110 defense or better with a speed of 28-35. Those ships have a pretty good chance of wading into enemy fleets of 10 or more ships and destroying them with out any assistance. If I come across enemy fleets that are damaging my big battleships, I call up my fleets of small hulled ships, and destroy the attacker- Seems to work out pretty well. I tend to play on the the Maso level, and I tend to win thru Military means- (I have not beat it on this version 1.3 yet thou)

yeah I had a look for groo after you mentioned it. lot of info on the web about it.

anyway back on topic.....I've just figured the game is a lot easier if you use a gigantic map and that my problem with ships aint an issue then, cos by then you can build mega starships.

i used the tactic of taking all the +12 planets, then once I got all them within range but out of range of your opponents, make sure you got xeno ethics, take the 7+ planets, use them as cash cow/research with a starport, you can max out the tech tree before opponents star to take the crap planets you didnt already take, which doesnt matter cos they will flip to you anyway.

by then you got all the techs, design a mega starship, murder the enemy.

I think you should get more points for the smaller maps in metaverse
