Shock news : Captain Kirk, space coward!!!

William Shatner refuses to go boldly where no one has gone before...

In a true story, William Shatner a.k.a. the famous Captain Kirk was offered a free seat on the first tourist spaceflight by Richard Branson of Virgin. The spaceflight due to take off in 2008 will be the first of it's type and will be the pioneer for future space tourism.

William Shatner was reported as saying, 'the idea scared him silly and he had no intention of puking his guts up in zero gee'.

Captain Jean Luc Picard will be approached instead...

you know he is really old to be going in space. i dont blame him at his age it would be risky just the takeoff..

he has gone so far, this little walk doesn't fit him or perhaps if they try with only women crew.

Funny, but not surprising. Shat's not exactly in great shape, either. He'd have to bust his ass to get into shape for a spaceflight. Is this a true orbital flight, or just a pop and drop?

I'd love to go up, but I'm not rich or famous, so keep lobbying for that space elevator... nothing gets very interesting until we can get people into Geosynchronous Orbit.

Thats what Virgin Galactic is for, keep selling expensive seats until the Tech gets cheap enough, down to $4000 instead of $200,000. Thatll take a while though, probably by 2012, if the world doesnt end in December 21 2012 That is.

In the book "Dragonfly" (the Russian nickname for Mir), there's a part about how the Russians agreed to take up a Japanese journalist who immediately upon reaching zero-gee got hopelessly spacesick and nearly vomited himself to death. Not the finest note to end one's career on.

Very cool to see something like this. They do need to find a representative that a) really wants to go and b) is in physical shape to do it. Ol' Shat is a bit past his prime so I don't blame him for turning down the offer. Patrick Stewart is younger and in better shape so he might be able to pull it off. In any case, they need to save themselves the potential emberassment and find someone who can handle it. Space flight is pretty taxing physically. Most people would need a lot of training.

This is space tourism we r talking about here. The idea is anyone would be able to do it, regardless of physical fitness, age etc...

Yep, good luck to them is what I say and to all those small independent ventures around the world who r sick of our slow progress into space. Nasa is cool, but if we continue at there speed, slow, slow, stop, slow...it will be a 1000 yrs before we escape our own solar system.

Besides the tourism venture, Virgin r also heavily into the first space plane. This new type of plane/spacecraft would be capable of transporting people from any 1 point on Earth to another point in just 40 minutes. It goes into low Earth orbit to achieve this and seats would obviously after be reasonably cheap (concorde price, would carry more people), Richard Branson is really keen on both those ventures.

If we can make space profitable, we will leap forward at a faster pace.

I never saw Star Trek... we couldn't afford the tickets... (just kidding, but I really didn't...)

wonder if they ever did the experiment of 'love making' in space or zero gee....

Astronauts stuck on a space station for months on end in a "co-ed" environment, lol. I'm sure they have allready done so.

It was probably a smart decision for him, since I'm sure I can't be the only one planning to murder somebody and nick their ticket.

Well, several hours in a small cabin with Paris Hilton would be rough on my stomach, too.
