Try Yahoo widgets they won't run SX stuff but there might be something there you like.

Yahoo Gadgets aren't as easy to develop as DesktopX if you're not familiar with a scripting language. As a user though it provides a lot of resources. And their isn't anything like DesktopX Pro that I know of.

I agree with all of the above.

Can I please just put in a plug for Kapsules?

It may not have as many widgets as Konfabulator (sorry, I don't do the Yahoo! name), but it is a great application. Give it a try.

I keep forgetting this plus it's made by Andrew a member here.

I soooo wanted to write Konfabulator.

Does Kapsules have similar problems with Desktop X widgets and Konfab widgets ? ie, like the start problem where suddenly everything gets duplicated, or some widgets just stop running randomly?

Have never experienced those problems with any of the programs you mentioned. Kapsules is very stable in my opinion. Andrew's pretty good at working at the bugs before releasing anything.

You must use different forums than I do.

If you want widgets, Avedesk (which also has a tabbed dock widget like objectdock plus), konfabulator/yahoo widgets, samurize, and there are things like sysstats which plugs into just about everything. Konfabulator has thousands of widgets and is the engine I prefer, eventhough I bought objectdesktop. I find both avedesk and knofabulator better than desktopX for widgets (stability and variety of widget choice). You might want to head over to deviantart and browse their categories as there are lots of free widget-type apps that I haven't even looked at yet. If you are looking for the total desktop replacement system but want to keep the MS shell then there isn't anything else like desktopX for that. But if thats what you want, I would recomend you take a peek at litestep or talisman, both free.

Good suggestions silkshadow. I'm a big fan of AveDesk and especially with AveScripter and SysStats (Which is open source now). Fairly comfortable in creating desklets & configs.

Really it comes down to a few choices. Are you interested in changing your system based on what is out there or flexibility in creating/implementing your own ideas. I bought DX Pro with the long range goal of making/selling gadgets.

If you're familiar with VBA programming in MS Office then it is relatively easy to pick up VBScript. No other system allows you to program in actual real time like builder. Actually, I guess SysStats actually does; however, it's slant is more related to scripting. DX allows users to program sort of using the GUI with the advantages of a scripting language.
