Columnist: Bush has it right on taxes, economy

Not great news for the Bush bashers, but great news for the economy in general.

From columnist Lawrence Kudlow, columnist, column found in The Washington Times of August 24, 2006, headline below is linked. Please note that due to the nature of updated columns and opinion pieces you may not find the original materials at the linked site if you visit at another time.

Bush has it right on taxes

By Lawrence Kudlow
August 24, 2006

Some conservatives are alleging the president suffers from an inability to communicate with the American people, and there may be some overrated truth to this. But in a news conference last Friday, we saw George W. Bush at his communicating best.

Commenting as I go here.... yup, communication is certainly not George W. Bush's strong suit, but he does seem to be able to tout the economic accomplishments of his administration pretty well, and deservedly so.

Following a Camp David meeting with his economic advisers, the president let 'er rip, saying: "The foundation of our economy is solid, and it's strong. Because of the tax cuts we passed, American workers and families and small businesses are keeping more of the money they earn. And they're using that money to drive this economy of ours forward." Could he be any clearer?

... even if he could be any clearer, would it matter to the Bush bashers and nay sayers? Not one bit. They don't care how wrong they are, nor how much they seem like Chicken Littles for touting doom and gloom in the economy that hasn't come to pass. They care only in being able to denigrate the current President of the U.S.A. and harming him and his party as much as possible.

The statements above though are dead on. The economy is solid, and it is because of the Bush tax-cuts. The Bush tax-cuts did as they were supposed to and stimulated the economy and in so doing have produced record revenue levels, and massive growth in employment to help dig us out of the post internet/tech-bubble bust. Were it not for those cuts, the economy could still be sputtering along as many U.S. citizens sat around hoping for a call, any call, from some potential employer.

The facts are that thanks to those cuts more money was available for capital spending, and more money was available for virtually all tax-paying U.S. citizens to use to spend as they saw fit, consuming goods and services and helping to drive demand for more goods and services which would require more workers to produce or provide.

Housing prices did increase too fast. However, people who purchased homes at the high end are now faced with a home that may be worth less they paid for it or worth less then their mortgage balance.

That will not change the impact on the economy. The question is, “ARE the Bush policies helping the Average Person. The answer is NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The GREAT economy Bush brags about is NOT helping the vast majority and the middle and low income workers who are worse off after considering very slow wage growth and the higher interest rates, energy and health costs. The Bush Tax and spend policies, which are because of Bush have only helped the wealthy.

Shut you fool! The question was about the tax cuts and ONLY the tax cuts. Better to shut up and be thought a fool, then to open your mouth and prove it!

Ah, please don't make him shut-up, I'm enjoying watching him dig himself a bigger hole to fall into as folks like yourself (Dr. Guy), drmiler, and Moderateman (as well as myself) point out the inconsistencies and flaws in his arguments.

As an example, Moderateman's great comments here:

are right on the mark also. The Clueless One, and others like him, and heck the majority of liberals in this country today are apologists and wanna be protectors for those that are too stupid to be responsible for their own poor decisions. I would say that no one was holding guns to the heads of those that bought more than they should have, and signed on for purchasing homes that are too much for them. That's not entirely true though as mortgage brokers, real estate brokers, bankers and others were arm twisting the people that were buying these homes to get more business while they could.

With that all said though, many people took advantage of the market to buy themselves nice homes. Homes they may not otherwise have been able to get -- even at these inflated and over-valued prices -- were more affordable thanks to low interest rates and a generally robust economy that provided jobs and income for the people that are now making payments on those homes.

The Clueless One (and again, others like him) would have us forget that it's not been that long ago that he (and they) were arguing that the economy was too piss poor to allow anyone to afford the cost of living -- including housing -- in many areas of the country. These people have done nothing but pooh pooh the economy and claim that Bush has wrecked things so badly as to never be repairable. The only problem is that the economy wasn't wrecked and really doesn't need more repair than the current "correction" in the over-heated housing market.

I'll grudgingly give just a few points to this statement (and only this statement) by the Clueless One:
If you think that a major slow down or worse in housing will not have a negative impact on the overall economy you are just in denial.

I won't deny that some in the U.S. will be harmed by a slow down in the housing sector. Home builders, construction workers, financiers, mortgage brokers, etc., may all find that their Christmas bonuses aren't so big this season, but if they were expecting the boom to continue unabated forever than they were (or are) as stupid as the idiots that thought the tech run-up of the late 1990's was never going to stop.

Eventually the Federal Reserve *notices* these anomalies in the economy and takes action to help correct the market and prevent any one sector from getting out of control and becoming the next catalyst towards hyperinflation in the entire economy, and those (like myself) that are smart enough to recognize that there's no such thing as "easy money" and who have been smart enough to learn from events of the past -- where every get rich quick speculative scheme normally ends about as quickly as it becomes noticable -- are the ones that aren't doomed to failure.

Well, we can tell when the Col is out of arguments. He resorts to name calling, because he thinks if he calls you a "big fat poopy-head", you'll be rendered speechless by his logic.

Col, you are not only a fool, but a rather unintelligent one at that. You have absolutely NO capacity for analyzing facts, all you can do is parrot someone else's spin. Like Gollum, you're more to be pitied than anything.

In fact, that's MY new nickname for you: Col. Gollum.

Bush's policies may be helping the economy, as they have been hurting the environment, but the environment always takes a back seat to the state of the nation. While it's a backwards way of thinking, it's necessary in order for our country to remain an economical power as well as a military one. No, his policies as a whole are not bad. What makes G.W. a bad president is the fact that in the face of 9/11 When the country stopped and cried in disbelief, when the world wept with us, he used it as an opportunity to further his political agendas, and start a war in a way that the rest of the world did not agree with, for all the wrong reasons. He used the fear created by the terrorist attack to erode our freedoms and to pass laws that saved big businesses money at the cost of our health. He did nothing to cement the bonds that the attacks created with our allies, and instead alienated us from the international community.

I May go too far when I say that he is a bad president, Although he is an undeniably poor public speaker. After all, if he is helping the economy, that is what he originally set out to do. And even if the rich benefit more directly from his tax cuts, the effects of a good economy will eventually benefit everyone in it. Including the poor and homeless, through more money available for charities. Everything he has done so far has shown that he has put the prosperity and power of the nation above the happiness of the people that our nation is composed of. No charts or statistics, no fluctuations in the markets will ever convince me that he ever saw the forest for the trees, and if by some fluke of luck the series of events he set into motion benefit the world in any way, well, the history books may record him as the "least liked, best president ever", but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Oh, and chest thumping tactics of name calling and intimidation fit well with the current administration, I'm sure they would be proud..
