Decent Space Warfare

My Idea

Let's have a real-time strategy game with spaceships that kill eachother. Next, let's make this game involve elements such as stealth, terrain in the form of asteroids and hiding behind planets and planetary rings, and three-dimensional warfare. Then, let's make three-dimensional warfare matter. If you attack someone out of an asteroids belt from above them, their probably going to be hurtin' burgers. Next up? Space ships that feel "real". No ST:TNG ships that magically bank at 45 degree angles and do 180 degree turns in mere seconds. Space ships that feel like ships: They take time to speed up, slow down, and turn. Then? Weapons that also feel "real". Missiles that lock on, CIWS systems that shoot down missiles, laser systems that instead of blowing up ships, burn holes in the ships so you can see the little guys fly out of them, suffocate and blow up, thus reducing the ship's efficiency. The icing on the cake? Let's make the game fun using the above elements.

You might want to check out Allegiance. It's not exactly what you had in mind, but until you finish that project, it's pretty good Space Warfare... Better, I think, because it's a first person space shooter game with a twist. There's a commander who is basically playing an RTS game, gathering resources and ordering ships about the map, and everyone else is flying according to his plan. Hopefully. Anyway, check it out, if it's not something you're into, all you'll lose is an hour or two of trying it.

If you have Homeworld 2, you should check out the Next Generation Combat Systems mod. It has all of that stuff and looks really pretty.

Sins of a solar empire due in 2007 and being published by Stardock looks set to deliver what you want as well, if you can wait that is.
