2007: Year of Supreme Commander

The heir to Total Annihilation

As some people know, I was a huge fan of Total Annihilation. It is, definitely, my favorite game of all time.

So much so that I've cleared months of my schedule in 2007 to dedicate playing, modding, and enjoying Supreme Commander, developed by Chris Taylor's new team. I'm just so excited for this game. More so than any other game ever.

I've made sure that all my project management and coding duties are reasonably clear during that time frame so I can fully get the most out of that time. ;)

Not that I won't be working at all, but I'll probably only work a normal 40 hour week during that time frame.

I guess I have to see what all the fuss is about. I obviously never played the first. Is it an RTS? Never really got into the genre.

See, I never could figure out why everyone got so excited over Total Annihilation. It was confusing, for one thing - there were a ton of unit types, and most were only effective against another single unit type, requiring tons of memorization. Plus, I never could understand exactly how the resource gathering system worked, so I was constantly running out of metal. All my friends went nuts over it; I just went back to playing Age of Kings (by far, the best RTS ever made).

Did you watch the Video from E3? Totally awesome. I loved TA, played it for years. I hope they get the unit management right, looks overwhelming so far. Can't wait till next year.

Are we talking about the same game? Each unit was effective against most other units, rather than the rock/paper/scissors rubbish that gets into most RTS games. The only exceptions were things like anti-air units or submarines, but that was pretty logical stuff, and not much to remember.

Well im a bit too young to have played TA, but from what I have read it was one of the greats. I will most definately be picking up Supreme Commander, RTS is the genre that got me into computer games(ahh Empire Earth, what a game)

Things are looking great for the RTS genre right now. As well as Suprmeme Commander, Blizzard has job postings for people with expirience with making 3D RTS maps...
Now, what do you think they'd need RTS designers for? Starcraft 2? If they can even match the original Starcraft, it'll be a miracle. But Blizzard has a history of miracles.

Never played Total Annihilation eventhough I'm a great fan of RTS games I played StarCraft instead

Yeah, Supreme Commander looks promising. Now I just hope they haven't messed up something like not updating the controls to atleast WarCraft IIIs lvls. (Only using the mana of 1 Sorceress when having 12 of them selected and autocasting with an on/off switch).

Funny that noone mentioned that Draginol crossposted (Not that anyone would dare to tell him anyway )

I so want to see Office LAN battles after work with this one

I hope they inlcude the long range guns as in TA and that the maps are at least as huge as in TA.

There was 1 map (not sure if it was in the expansions) with 2 big "islands" where it took a while to get to the other side, long range radar "only" showed 1/5th or something of the map, and the long range guns didn't reach halfway.. Still, that was far more then C&C long range guns could do..

Supreme Commander... grand looking game... couldn't stop watching the trailer over and over and over again. Playing it right now, come to think of it. Nice ambience. Never got into TA. I own it... but never got into it... I couldn't even beat the Single player aspect of the game, which is deffinatly saying something. I only played TA within this year... didn't own it till this year... hell, never heard of TA till 97 in a PCGamer Magazine, back when they gave free cds with their mags. I still got the magazines and the demo cds. Heh... first RTS I played was the original Command and Conquer, from a "CD Power Full Version" from Punchline Publishing.

Maybe it'll be a MMORTS (ie: nothing like WoW...)

To think... I just liked you because you make GalCiv...

TA is definately the best RTS on the planet. The modding community is STILL kicking, and TA came out when? 97? That's almost 10 years of TA! TA will never die! LONG LIVE CHRIS TAYLOR!

LONG LIVE GALCIV! Man... I'm going to have a hard time choosing which to play...

Well yeah but Starcraft is still going on strong and it also came out by the end of 97, brood war in 98. The difference is the game is so fukn good , no need for that many mods, we got trigger maps for that. You just got to enter Battle.net and you'll see theres over 200,000 + people playin at any 1 time.

Also, a little offtopic, theres this other game that seems interesting too, not that it can be compared to Supreme Commander on the epic scale of battles, but still epic on its own right    The game is Spore, and you can start playin from the begining of Evoulution, you read right, from the bacteria micro world, to space faring civilization. Can do a little bit of everything, a little sims with your cratures, a little simcity with creating your civilization's cities, little bit of Civilization style gameplay with dyplomacy with neighbors, conquering through economic, cultural or of course military machines. Little bit of 2001:Space oddeysey. Has everything. I found on yahoo some movies from the GDC of last year where Will Wright, the author of the sims, simcity, and now spre, talks about the game. The movie is 1 hour long , but the site has some other movie clips from E3 at the right of the screen. here you go:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-262774490184348066&q=Will+Wright
If you dont want to hear the introduction, fast forward to 12 minutes and he'll be talking bout spore then...

I hope we can have space battles on that game, but till' now I havent heard anything related to massive space battles, so ill keep looking for that.

Enjoy

On the subject of Total Annihilation still having an active modding community, check out Spring ( http://taspring.clan-sy.com ) an open-source/free game that starts where TA left off, fully 3D, plenty of of active mappers and mods... and while you only get a hundred or so people online at a given time, that's usually enough for a good game.
