I'm stuck on a hugh map game with low militery. need some advice....

It is now 5 years after the start of the game and I have the most planets. the arcean Empire is my ally and i'm gonna destroy them after I win the altarian. my militery is low and the altarain has the strongest militery in the game, because they didn't yet research the whole solidering techs, I safe but not for a very long time... I got most of the the weapon tech tree but my strongest ship is the core ship from the game -"Excalibur". what shell I do it's my first big big game and the altarain Empire just have to many planets for me to conquer... I got the altarian homeworld in my map but it's to well defended... they got fleets of tiny ships that have all together 385 mass driver??!?! and I already got over Harpoon... so I need to design my own ship or attch them in some thing or what?

any help will be very appreciate

Design your own ship it's really easy and very intuitive. Also i'd go into researching armour so they can't scratch my ships.

Like space cow said, if they have lots of mass driver weapons, make sure your designs have armor to defend against them. If speed is not an issue, skimp on the engines a bit, just enough to move the ships into defensible positions around planets.

Focus on a weapon for which your enemy does not have any or very good defense for. In this case, if you have focused on missles and your enemy has high anti-missle tech but no armor or shields, you might focus on mass drivers or beam weapons.

If your espionage is high enough, click around their ships and fleets to examine the weapon platforms and then design specific ships against those threats. Build some fast transports to get through any space naval forces once the orbital naval forces are taken out and capture high production worlds to reduce thier turn around on rebuilding thier fleet to counter yours.

Try a mix of designs based on the threats and needs for your pending invasion.

Above all, try to stay friendly with them for as long as possible while you build up your military... unless they shoot first in which case, good luck.

Thanks, I'll try that out now!

Look, I got another problem, I'm now researching mass driver defenses but they sent Hugh fleets with 460 mass driver and transports (advanced ones...) to my usable planets and I'm defenseless! please I need help
what should I do...? there is a picture of the situation:

-things that are marked in red are things that I want to get rid of

-and things that are marked in blue are things that are my primary target and I have no chance to get them...

well if you cant counter them at this time then i suggest giving them a few star systems to buy you some time to research the needed defence and build the new custom ships. seeing how you control most of the map anyway, you can just reconquer this worlds when you're ready    also try tech trading with the arcean, they might have something researched already.

Yes, you definately want to buy sometime and make friends. Give them some small worlds maybe some money to buy peace.

Then develop some fast lightly armed ships, it does not matter what weapon you use, but have at least one and a few engines. Use these to intercept unprotected transport fleets incase war breaks out again.

If war does not break out, simply start building up your main assault fleet again.

I got a time problem, I can't make one ship that will have most power to destroyer the altarain fleets in one turn, I need some bigger fleets and more logistics but I can't get some more. My best prosuction planet is my home world, he is 5 weeks away from the altarian blockead and i'm runing out of people and money (on the blockead planets) maybe this game is lost and I shell try lowering the difficult...

Ideally, you should have a military ready to go to war at anytime. I suggest you better start bulding up your forces.

build defense. from the look of it you don't have _any_ defense- but it probably doesn't show what's around planets. design a cheap ship with very good defense (HP and armor mostly) and some attack, but keep it cheap. mass- produce those around your planets. If they are defended already, go for something a little more well-rounded (with some speed and sensor range). That's a basic plan that pops into my head, haven't played GalCiv2 yet just going by GC1 strats and common sense.

can you befriend the Arcean Empire and ally with them? they're in a good position. Not to take the homeworld (the blue thing, right?) but to at least cut them off from part of their empire.

other than that, I don't know. Good luck anyway.

edit: just looked again at the contested area (the middle red circle). if those ships are as powerful as you say they are you are in a load of crap. give them those worlds, as many as it takes to get peace, and then build defenders like I desceribed. it isn't looking good for you though, they basically control both those sectors from what it looks like.

ok, thanks and I'm already ally with the Arcean Empire, but they have really low militery... they can't do anything about the altarians, they always said "Froget about that. they are to strong..." so I guess I'll reserch until the top of the Beam tree and the mass driver defense tree and then when they don't have any defense for that I'll attck... Thanks for the tip

A few thoughts to consider...

Don't bite off more than you can chew:

That is to say, going around snatching up free planets is fine and dandy however they do you no good if you can't keep them. In fact, if you spend time building improvements on ungarrisoned worlds that are then taken from you, you've done nothing but help the enemy that much more by providing them free factories, markets, ect.

Are you old enough to remember the cold war?

A few decades ago the United States and the USSR were in a deadlocked arms race. Each side was afraid the other was going to mass more nuclear weapons and thereby have more leverage. Interestingly, neither was willing to make the first strike knowing the cost of such a decision.

The same principles apply to most war games. If you have a comparable military, the enemy is going to think twice before making the first move. Sure there are certain factors that will ultimately force them to attack. The Torians for example constantly invade if I am Evil and near them. Likewise, the Drengin always attack if I am Good.

A beginning strategy to preventing war, or at least, holding it off until you feel 'ready' is to constantly monitor the military build-up of other nations. This is easily done with the military graph window after contact. The number of ships and their relative strengths is factored into the overall projected line. When you see them start to build, you need to as well.

You'll even be tributed to by weaker nations when you overwhelm them with military might.

In my opinion, the best expansion tactic is a solid frontier. Expand moderately until you've researched a few notches into your favorite weapon and can build medium hulled ships. Don't bother trying to defend with small or tiny ships. That's a waste of time and production and you know you'll need to upgrade them to medium at the very least anyways. Begin with medium sized ships, one warp drive and full hilt weapony. As you reach out to the stars keep the frontier garrisoned. Sentry fleets behind the front line planets to prevent interior attacks. As your borders expand, move the garrisons and the sentries further out, constantly upgrading them as you go. As time progresses you will have a brick wall of a border. Also, new ships travelling to the border serve as internal guard until they reach their destination in case of sneak attacks or the like.

Trying to garrison every planet is possible but very expensive and requires a lot of micromanagement. Even if the enemy punches a hole in your frontier, you have time to redirect ships to the location and/or produce more to meet the threat.

And as always, outfit ships best suited for the task. 75 points of laser damage per ship is costly to maintain and futile against 75 points of shield defense. You want to make every move count. Every ship, every soldier, every planet has a purpose. Use them to your advantage.

So, from what that all of you said (that really help me) I guess I'll have peace with them by giving them some planets.. that will give me time to rebuild my army... and then when they don't expact it.. I'll reunit with my planets and attck the altarin homeworld.. and then they will be shut down? thanks everybody for the tips.
