HELP ME!!!!

Basically, when i start the comp it all runs fine
it has the usual black screen boot check mumbo jumbo
but then
after the boot from cd section of startup it all goes pear shaped, where usually i would have the windows icon, and the animated status bar, i have nothing, the screen goes black until the login screen. I mean seriously, what the hell!
