How to keep Windows XP stable - HELP!

Error Message - Abnormal Termination!

Following the link https://www.wincustomize.com/articles.aspx?SID=1&AID=505&c=1#962810 teaching/suggesting ways to make XP stable over time, I accessed the Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services area and disabled/stopped some of the processes considered "useles", according to the author. I didn't disable all of them, but only those which I think ARE useless for my machine. Problem is I had just re-formated my desktop and installed the programs, and everything was OK. But afetr doing the same fine-tunning process to my laptop PC, and re-booting, I started receiving the error message: http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/5629/error1df5.jpg I have WB5 running with Arrow skin. I unloaded it, returned to XP style, but still got the message: http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/8377/error2wb1.jpg I have only a widget running. Could this be the problem? Don't think so! I re-checked every process I had disab;ed in Services looking for the path described in the error message but couldn't find C:\WINDOWS\System32\bcwltry.exe Any clues of what that might be? Anyone know which service is attached to this and that I'm supposed to re-start in order for the message to go away? Here is a list of the services which I stopped/disabled completely: Alerter ClipBook COM+ Event System COM+ System Application Distributed Link Tracking Client Error Reporting Service Help and Support Human Interface Device Access Indexing Service Messenger [sic] NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing Network DDE Network DDE DSDM Performance Logs and Alerts Routing and Remote Access Secondary Logon Security Accounts Manager Terminal Service Uninterruptable Power Supple (UPS) WMI Performance Adapter Bear in mind that we have three possible atartup types for each one of them: Automatic Manual Disabled And can anybody tell me what the "SVCHOST.EXE" process is all about? It uses almost 2,000 handles and it has many "arms".   HELP SOMEBODY! I don't wanna lose the good configuration I had made. Thanx guys!

bcmwltry.exe is the tray bar process for the Broadcom Corporation Wireless Network software. Get hold of WinPatrol (www.winpatrol.com, funnily enough!) or run msconfig and disable this app from running at startup. You shouldn't have any further issues.

Way to go Ooberman. Looking here and there I was able to find the problem. Restored to a previous point and found out I couldn't have disabled "COM+ Event System" and
"COM+ System Application", these are needed by Broadcom Wireless. The rest is OK by now. Wish I could disable a few more useless services running, but I'm still testing and am not sure which. About the svchost.exe, can you tell me what it is and what it does in the background? Thanx a million!

Sorrry Island! Hastiness is my worst enemy. I tried to go back but it was too late.

svchost is the host process for services (service host!). You'll notice that 99% of services that are shown as running in admin tools don't show up in task manager - they are instead running as part of svchost.exe. When you strip your services down you'll find that svchost consumes less and less memory. Svchost is obviously a legitimate app and is nothing to worry about.

Good luck!

Thanx Ooberman. I am indeed trimming things bit by bit over here. Hope I get this box to work smoothly.
