Can't activate or register the game? See here first!

Can't activate or register the game? See here first!

If you are unable to activate or register the game (via SDC, or after installing the latest patch), you're likely encountering one of a few common problems.

1) Your game came with NO serials at all.
There have been some reports of legitimate retail copies of the game not coming with a serial key at all. If you are sure your copy is legitimate and it did not come with ANY serials, contact [email protected].

2) You're using the wrong serial.
This is a simple but common mistake. The Collector's/Limited Editions of the game normally include two serial keys (one for the game, one to unlock the special extra content). Be sure you're not trying to register with the CE serial (the one that begins with GC2). Use the other one which consist of 28 letters/numbers (A-F and 0-9 ONLY) with no dashes.

3) You bought a used copy of the game.
If you (intentionally or not) bought a used copy of the game, you may receive a message when attempting to register/activate to the effect of the serial already being in use, or your email address not matching the one the game was originally registered with. Stardock will not remove an activated serial from the original owner's account and give it to you.

You have a few options in this case. You can:
  • Keep the game and stick with the 1.0 version on the disc.
  • Return the game to the place of purchase. Some retailers still accept returns, especially if they resold to you a returned copy that the original owner has effectively pirated (resale is prohibited by the EULA).
  • Contact stardock support ([email protected]) and ask about pruchasing a new serial code at reduced cost.

4) You bought the European Limited Edition.

Some copies of the Limited Edition of the game distributed in Europe were shipped with only the code to unlock the special Ltd. content, (beginning with GC2) and not an actual game serial. You can request a game serial by providing your Limited/Collector's Edition serial and email address on this form: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx

5) You bought the US Collector's or Standard Edition in June or later.
There have been several production runs that shipped to retail in the US without the correct keys. Some Collector's Editions shipped to WalMart and Fred Meyers included two CE keys (beginning with GC2-), but no game serial. Some Standard Editions have shipped to Best Buy and other retailers with a single CE key and nothing else.

In either case, please first try inputting your serial and email address on the European serial exchange page, which has been updated to include most of the serials from these production runs: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx. If that does not work, please contact [email protected] with your problem and they will provide you a game serial to use.

Please keep in mind they can only answer during business hours, so if you contact them on a weekend you will not receive a [human] reply until Monday at the soonest. You should receive an automated reply immediately upon receipt of your email, though (check that it is not filtered by any spam protection you have in place). If you do not receive an automated reply, your own message was likely stopped by Stardock's spam filters, so you will obviously never get a reply to that particular message! If all else fails, try getting on Stardock Central's Chat and speaking with an employee directly during business hours (IRC users: irc.stardock.com, channel #Stardock or #GalCiv).

6) You bought a pirate/bootleg copy of the game.
Despite our best efforts, sellers on eBay and elsewhere continue to sell bootleg copies of GC2. There are usually many tell-tale signs that these copies are not legitimate which become obvious once you receive them: poorly printed disc art, cheap-looking packaging, missing documentation, etc. Most of these copies claim to be used "Import Version" games, and the sellers claim that documentation is excluded because it is not in English. If these copies contain a serial key at all, they are generally already registered or just random gibberish.

In any case, there is no support for users of pirate/bootleg copies. If you purchased them through eBay, you may be able to file a claim and get your money back, but there are no guarantees. If you wish to own the game with updates and support, you must purchase a legitimate copy, which will entitle you to your own serial key and all the associated benefits.

Sorry, but patches are now only available via SDC. However, if you can install SDC on a machine that is connected, then you can download via SDC and package the files for use on an offline machine:

To get the download version of the game (or the patch for a retail copy) up and running on an offline machine:

1) Install SDC on an online machine (keep a copy of the SDC installer handy).

2) Log in on SDC, head to the Games section, right click on the game, and choose Archive Application->Download and Archive. If the game is already installed and updated on this machine you can choose Archive Application->Selected Application to pack it up without redownloading.

3) If the game has modules (GalCiv2 does, for example), you'll be prompted to archive them as well. If the media you'll use to transfer the game isn't large enough, you may need to decline and archive each module sparately; otherwise just say yes.

4) When the archive process finishes, you'll find the .sdc file(s) in C:\Program Files\Stardock\Stardock Central\BACKUP (this path is customizable in SDC's settings so it may vary). Copy the .sdc files along with the SDC installer to the portable media of your choice (CDR, DVDR, USB drive, etc).

5) On the offline computer, install SDC, then double-click the .sdc archive files in explorer to unpack them.

6) Run the game; you'll be prompted to activate. Enter the appropriate information and attempt to proceed; it will fail and offer you an option to activate by email. Copy the subject line and mail body it provides and get them back to the connected machine; email them off as directed, and follow the instructions in the reply to complete the activation process.

What *exactly* does the error say ('codes don't match' could be interpreted as a couple of different things)?

Sorry, but patches are now only available via SDC.

May I enquire why something as basic as patches to fix gamebreaking bugs are not available without unnecessary programs (which as others have pointed out function in a manner which is essentially spyware)? Why should I have to jump through numerous hoops, give an e-mail address and permit a spyware program access to my computer to get the game in a state which it should have been in when I purchased it? Why does the system in many cases (including mine) not even function properly, resulting in people who are unable to patch their copy of the game because something has screwed up in the endless maze of e-mails and serial numbers this company makes their customers run through to get basic patches.

None of this garbage is necessary, yet Stardock infuriates its customers with time wasting and intrusive behaviour. Any other game has patches freely available on download sites which do not require more access codes than a nuclear launch system to get to. Making a customer jump through hoops to even attempt to fix your screw ups is not a good move.

Is there any chance of this company actually doing what every other has managed, and putting patches up in a manner which does not require intrusive programs, e-mails, multiple serial numbers, and then not actually work?

How would you define Windows Update or  Norton Liveupdate?

give an e-mail address

Well, this is required to play GC2:DL after it has been patched with the latest standalone patch available

permit a spyware program access to my computer

What is exactly a spyware program? And SDC will just check registry entries associated with Stardock to inform you about the various available udpates. BTW, in general, any program running on your computer will have access to it

the endless maze of e-mails and serial numbers this company makes their customers run through to get basic patches.

Well, Stardock's updates aren't really what you could call 'basic patches'. And not everybody has problem with SDC when updating GC2. It is really sad that you have a bad experience with SDC.

Did you get any response? Particularly, an automatic response right away--if not, then your mail was either never received or you have a spam blocker that stopped the reply.

If you have another email to use then I'd suggest using that instead. Hotmail has a history of tossing our responses without even telling users.

Im having the the same problems. Initially was getting a 'wrong Serial message' Now im getting the 'Email does not match' response. Ive had GC2 for awhile now, in fact its been long enough that ive downloaded patches from Stardock before Stardock Central was imposed. SDC is a ROYAL PAIN. I probably wont be getting any response from Stardock for awhile, if at all. Not very pleased with this update software at all.

Did you contact support and get an automated ticket message? If so, they should get back to you within a couple of business days (often next day).

What me do? I creat empire. But don't creat character and register game.
I bought a used licence of the game.
Once serial code was aplied. Once more nothing.

How long does it take to correct an email issue?

I use a different email on my PayPal account (my chosen method of payment) than my regular email: I paid for my copy of GalCivII last Friday (16 Nov.) and emailed support the same day to ask them to "match up" the emails, or whatever needs to be done. As of today I've still not heard anything, and still cannot download the game via StarDock.

I've enjoyed the demo so much, I'm really looking forward to getting to play it properly, but I've not heard a thing!

Did you at least get an automated response telling you your ticket details? If not, your mail provider may be blocking support's responses.

If that's the case, you can submit a ticket directly through this page. Just click next, then fill out the form and submit it (no need to log in or register there).

Thanks for that info & your prompt response - I've registered a ticket via that link.

FYI, I didn't receive an automated response. I'll check with my ISP to see if there's an issue there, but I doubt it. I habve, of course, granted permission for "@stardock" & "@galciv" domains on my permission-based spam filter.

Do you as a company use any other domains I might need to whitelist?

I get an error message that arnor isn't registered. when I reregister it says my sn is invalid. when I get my numbers from SD they are not the same. All of the numbers show invalid both the ones in my e-mail when I bought it and the one from SD when I ask for my numbers. Also SD WILL NOT allow me to change the e-mail address on the expansions. I bought arnor under a new address. when i register with the address I bought with SD changes it to my old address. SD does have my new address as my e-mail address

as an update I have asked for my sn's 4 times and I have gotten 4 different numbers and NONE of them work

The game can only be registered to the email address it was bought with. If you have a different address on your SDC account, you'll need to contact [email protected] and request an account merge with the two emails.

Do you mean it won't activate (not the same as registering), but it still runs anyway?
Seems the activation system is having some issues, should be sorted shortly.
