City inspector charged with seeking bribes on illegal sites

A D.C. Department of Transportation inspector was indicted last week on charges of seeking cash payments in exchange for allowing illegal job sites to operate or to prevent contractors from being fined.
Denard A. Smith, the second city inspector charged in a bribery scandal in the past month, used the term "lunch" as way of getting cash from people who failed to obtain city work permits, according to records filed last week in federal court in the District.
"You know what I'm saying: When I say, 'Take me out to lunch,' I can't say, 'Well, give me some money,' you know what I'm saying, I'm taking a bribe here," Mr. Smith said in a conversation with a person facing a fine, the court records showed.

As noted in the few words I included before the news clipping - I really hope they toss the book at this clown.

He wanted a free lunch, well I hope that he gets several free meals, 3 square meals a day, along with regimented exercise time and designated visiting hours for his family to come visit him in the jail - either federal or local.

What a crock, trusted to make sure that the occurences he was accepting bribes for weren't happening, and instead demanding "free lunches" (aka money) so he could turn his blind eye towards what he knew was going on and line his pockets. I wonder just how many jobs that could have gone to legal citizens were lost to people that had no business taking them because of this bogus inspector?

Since DC is technically federal properaty, wouldn't this be a Federal crime? Another case of "Criminals are STUPID!!!"
