Freighters

I would like to be able to define the route from one plane to another. The overall value of the route should be calcuated at the shortest distance, but if I am able to make my route go around the influence of an enemy, so I can actually benefit from the trade route, that would be great. It really sucks if you are in a corner and you are at war with your neighbor and the trade route you so carefully established by going around the enemy is worthless because the AI decided that the best route is through the middle of the enemy.

Better yet, trade routes should AUTOMATICALLY go around enemy territory. If and when you stop war with someone, the trade route can then go streight through their terrirtory again.

Bring on the intellegent trade routes!!!

The trade route provides the same income regardless of where it travels but I guess you mean that the freighter will be picked off by the enemy as it travels through its territory. It might be attacked anyway but I will admit that skirting their territory would give them a better chance.

The only way to stop that is build Galactic Privateer or try to escort them. They might ignore them for awhile but if the war goes on long they will get around to them and it is hard to save them.

As some other threads have discussed, the income from trade is not that big a factor anyway and when they destroy your freighters it may encourage the trade partner to come into the war on your side.

For the income that you get, I can't imagine going to the trouble to set up a long circuitous route hoping to avoid attack

The income is quite noticeable, especially at lower tech levels and smaller galaxies. It may not be huge, but it can be deciding. Plus, trade influences relations as well.
