I don't even know what to search for

Ok so I've got an idea for a "dock" but I don't think it's actually a dock because it's floating. Here's the idea:

When you press the windows key on the keyboard, a swirl of 8 objects appear around your mouse (wherever it is at the moment) the swirl stays in the same spot as long as you continue to hold the win key. Each of the 8 objects can either be an icon or a folder. Icons can be clicked just like a regular icon. Folders will expand when clicked on into a new array of icons and/or folders. You can click as many icons as you want before you let go of the win key. When you let go, the whole array dissapears.

Has anyone done anything like this before? If so, what was it called?

Hmm, sounds like a kind of 'ObjectDock' except circling the mouse... very cool idea. I havent heard of a program like that before...

I'd certainly try it out...
...would/could it be somewhat like Tiggs' Orbital Weather widget, where orbs appear on command and surround the cursor? Check out Tiggs' site to see it...

Try Orbit, the Round Dock for Windows.

It's almost exactly like what you asked for. The only differences are:

-It's Win+Crtl, rather than just Win, and
-If you click an object on it or click anywhere else onscreen, it will go away and leave you alone until you call it again with your predefined call key (button, etc.)

Note: you must install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 to use it and the program itn't as "customer-supported" as objectdock is (basically you're going to have to figure most of it out on your own). But it's very versatile with animations, fonts, transparencies/opacities, etc.

I know I'm awesome for finding this for you.
