Masochistics Level

It truly is masochistic

Can you have any hope of winning on this level with a race that is not warlike(iconian)? I mean when i look at how fast the AI goes for weapons and even with a +20 in research, i lag very far behind. And to make it worse, most race don't like you very much so alliance takes too long to come around to help you. The difference between this level and crippling is incredible! I own the computer big time with crippling difficulty, but with masochistic, i can't do anything if i does not start with a war race like the yor/drengin/altarian/knor. I think i will go back to crippling to console me a little.

Anybody care to share their wisdom on this difficulty level and above? I guess i did not start in such a nice position in my first game on this level and also my ennemies were close and had a very good position, so maybe i was just very unlucky.

This level made me remember the first galciv, when you cranked up the level to difficult or something similar and the ai gave you a run for your money. Truly amazing!

Those who think the game is too easy, try this level and give me some feedback.

I too found that with 1.11 masochist level is damn hard. I have won 2 games at this level since this patch but bloody hell was it hard. I needed alliances.
There does indeed seem a great difference between this and crippling which I have never lost at.

It's winnable.

yup, its not that difficult. And you don't need alliances to win.

The AI's game has definately improved now in 1.11. I am rarely finding embassies on their planets and never spammed across the whole surface like before. This obviously allows them to be much stronger in the military and tech race.

I think you just hit that threshold though where you finally met your match (as far as your current ability goes). It doesn't take all that much difference in the AI's bonuses to make the gap between winning and losing seem pretty big. Just take some time on crippling if you are unable to win maso and practice refining your strategy since the AI should play in the same way on both levels. I find that it generally just takes more micro-management, better planned tech advancement and less mistakes / bad random events to win on higher difficulties. Of course using AI exploit cheese that you feel comfortable with is a given when dancing at the higher levels. I guess I'll try turning tech trading back on to see if that's gotten any less cheap...

While high difficulty level games tend to be more engaging, I'm finding myself having less fun and actually feeling stressed while playing them, even when things are going well. Although I'll challenge myself occationally, I think I'll be toning it down some, especially as the AI continues to get better. At the rate it takes me to complete a masochistic game, I'll never get one of those 100 game medals for my 3 characters...

I think the step between crippling and masochist is to big. A difficulty between those 2 levels would suit me just fine.

Hi!
I too had some heavy arguments against big bonuses AIs got above crippling: You can check this thread.

Several threads started about this now. I wonder if anybody from Stardock has noticed yet?

The game remains unplayable for me right now. Crippling is boringly easy...the result is never in doubt. Masochistic or higher, no tech trading, the result is also never in doubt!
