ransoming virus!?!?!

ok, i was checking out the news on foxnews.com, and came acros this little but nasty critter. what it does is finds your files that you use a lot and then zips them and encryps the file with a 10+ character password, then tells you the only way you can possibly get the info back is to pay $300 to an account, and was boasting that there was nothing you can do except pay, but what they did't say and i thought up was, you have to wire the money to an accout, who says that you cant track the transaction, or worse, if they have your card number, then they could stael that number fairly easaly. just had to post that!!!

I'm not an expert, but I'd imagine that they've set themselves up for a fall there. If they actually recieve money, then surely that means that there must be some sort of trail that would lead to them. Seems like they could get caught pretty quickly...

It's worth getting a firewall, and if you have to look at pr0n then don't do it on an admin account login;)

I've heard of this actually, there is a way to get rid of it through your system files. Can't remember how to do it though, but I'm sure you can google search it.

If I recall, with zip, if you can come up with an identical file as one that is in the zip archive, you can undo the zip encryption (because the tool will work backwards to unencrypt when it has the original to compare against).
