Defenses?

I know that certain defenses match up against certain weapons...mass driver to armor, laser to sheilds, missles to chaff...
but say I have missles going against armor? I think i saw somewhere that its like the square root of the armor or something like that....is this true? Does anyone know how the defenses match up to a weapon type different then the type its designed for?

Yes it's true.

I really don't know what else to say...

You already knew the answer.

One thing to keep in mind is there is nothing to be gained by adding a secondary defense unless both defenses are 2 or greater. The first defense that is added to a ship also gives you at least 1 defense against any other weapon type, I believe. So early on, 1 of anything can really be a good help. After that, wait until you can double up or have reasearched > 1 defenses together with some minituturation (sic) before slapping stuff on you ships (other than more weapons) which is always a good idea.

By the way, don't quote me if I'm wrong

If the game indeed rounds down, there's no point in putting on secondary defenses of rating 2 or 3 either since the square root will be 1, the same as level 1 armor. If I were putting secondary armor on, I wouldn't probably bother with anything better than titanium until I got Kanvium for instance. (Kanvium III is as small as titanium so the only reason to not bump up would be if you're cash strapped.)
*When 1.2 patch changes the combat so that defenders get to shoot at the same time as attackers, armor tactics will be more important than now.
**by secondary defenses, I mean whichever defenses block the weapons that the computer isn't currently using.

The 1 of each type gives your 3 for each if I am not mistaken. The 4 of each type gives you 8 and so on. This is why it is good to research the different defenses. However, 16 of one will give you 16 on that one but 4 on the others still not bad if you can match the 16 to the dominate attach tech of the other. I personally like to pump up one really high and then if he starts changing his weapon type I upgrade the ships to the other type (expensive but cheaper then making the replacements.)
