Go for Mom 2

Stardock should definitively push to obtain MoM rights. There is already a huge fan base waiting for Mom 2. Go Stardock!

Yep , but it should be "real" MoM continuation , better graphics, more spells and may be races but the game should be the same, especially tactical combat

If by MoM you mean Master of Magic, I would literally cry if that game became available. Master of Magic is my favorite video game of all time. I believe activision had the rights but they abandoned the project due to financial difficulties. (I could be wrong though, I am just going by my limited memory, in my ancient age ~~~~ )

I would love to see Stardock update that. It was the greatest game! I looked into buying an old copy of it, but it's going for $60.00 used.

You can buy a used copy of MoM on ebay for under $20, and it also qualifies as abandonware, so acquiring a less-than-completely-legit copy is technically not illegal, and besides noone exists who would bother to prosecute if it were.

As I remember MoM, it was one of the most unbalanced games I've ever played. Set your race up correctly at the start and they might as well declare you victor in round 1. You had to hamstring yourself to make the game interesting.

I liked the concept, but the first thing any sequel would need would be to balance the game.

I know I'm about to be crucified by the fanbois, but I'd rather see a new version of X-COM done right, than MoM.

And Erdrick84, I wish MOOIII hadn't been made, but I consider this game the proper sequel to MOOII.

Well I'm sure Stardock could do it if they wanted to, but it looks like they already have a next project besides more updates (yay! ) and expansion packs which is Society.

I know where UnderDaGun is coming from, but I think it wasn't THAT bad - sure, there were a few builds that were basically unstoppable, but if you did anything else, it was a challenge for awhile (almost any setup was a runaway effect if you lived long enough). I'd say there were more interesting builds than "broken" ones.

MoM2 would be tough for anyone to do at this point - it's been so long that the opinions of how to do it will be contentious (just look at the UFO:AM/UFO:AS games and how some X-Com fans react - and those don't even claim to be true sequels, just in the same genre).

But, it would definitely be neat to see StarDock do *some* kind of strat game in a fantasy setting, whether or not they get the MoM rights. A lot of what's been done is directly applicable; the biggest change I can imagine is that they'd either have to dumb down the tactical combat to use the GalCiv style, or they'd have to develop a more hands-on combat model (perferably the TBS model that MoM had).

The problem is, as UnderDaGun hints, is that what was great about MoM is in some ways what would be so terrible about a sequel. The lack of balance would have to be fixed, but the overpowered heroes and spellcasting in combat was actually part of what was fun (IMHO). So you'd have to strike a very fine balance between having heroes that were fun and made a difference but weren't overpowered.

Actually, has anyone else tried the NEW demo for HoMM5? That's actually got a lot of the old MoM elements - the grid-style turn-based combat, heroes, etc. It doesn't have the "central wizard" factor so much, but otherwise it's very much like MoM, writ 3-D. What it's missing is the "world-map" sized play (at least, from what the demo showed), which is what I liked about MoM; if the map is too small, it tends to come down to surviving long enough to build a superarmy that can crush anything in it's path, one big battle to wipe out each other player's main army, and game over.

MOM still my favourite - XCom Close second
Even if they didn't get the rights for MOM They could still do a good fantasy based game
Spirits replace constrcutors
Nodes - Resources - etc etc
The tactical part could be kinda tricky
The last thing we'd need would be the MOOIII treatment
They certainly ddi a great job with thus

Personally, if the MOM name is going to be expensive, I'd rather see them spend $100k on another developer rather than spending $100k on a brand name.

While no one may bother to sue you if your not making money off of it, its legal status has not changed because it's abandonware. Acquiring an illegitimate copy is still a violation of copyright law.

MOM is also my favorite game. I play it every month or so. I have tried almost all the various MOM descendants (Lords of Magic, Age of Wonders, Disciples, Dominions.) I still prefer MOM. I know it is unbalanced. That is part of the charm. You can play hard. You can play easy. There are
many ways you can win (or lose.)

Triumph Studios made a series called Age of Wonder. Its really the spiritual successor to MoM, and they did a good job of it.

*Raises hand* Guilty as charged.

Xentax is probably right about a true sequel never being recieved well because it couldn't live up to nostalgia. His point about X-Com is well taken. However, now that you all have me thinking about it, I think I would love a fantasy-based strategy game done with the care that Stardock put into GalCiv II. Let them create a new franchise, even if comparisons to MoM would inevitably be made.

I haven't tried HOMM:5 because of the Starforce issue. Now that's no longer a problem, so maybe I should take a look.

I wouldn't even look at UFO:AM/UFO:AS. Both recieved bad reviews, and even worse were infected with Starforce.

How is that different from all the past HOMMs? Or haven't you played any of them? HOMM is no MOM i tell you for reasons you mention.

magine MOM2 with Stardock-AI...

Well Stardock AI only works because everything in galciv is so dull and balanced E.g techs just add more of the same, abilities are just more of the same etc . I would love to see Stardock's AI trying to figure out how to play various 11 book strategies.

Age of Wonders 1 and 2 were spiritual successors to MoM. AoW:Shadow Magic came the closest to the MoM feeling but none of them captured the magic. The game feels much more restrictive then MoM did.

So?
