An idea of mine ... of interest to StarDock?

Basically I have just purchased a widescreen monitor, and a few thoughts crossed my mind, I was beginning to be annoyed by windows which when maximised are unnecesarily wide and a waste on on screen real estate, I know that I can use 'tile vertical' to take two windows and split them equally between the width of the screen however I find that if I have more than two running programs juggling them to ensure that only the two I want are tiled is an annoyance and inconvenience. What I would love to be able to create a psuedo dual screen set up of customisable size within a single widescreen which would allow programs to maximise properly within their respective 'pseudo screen'. Maybe split a screen 3 ways, I imagine a slider/marker at the top edge to dynamically resize the screens 'on the fly'.

Bearing in mind StarDock's experience with messing around with multiple screens this seems like a logical idea for them to make use of, a kind of an inverse Multiplicity. Maybe you could even somehow have the input from a second PC as being the second psuedo screen on the main monitor and be able to swish the divider from side to side revelaing the seconf screen like a sliding door and allowing one person to operate two PCs in that fashion.

Does it sound like a good idea?

Sounds good to me, but without the coding knowledge I couldn't implement it.

I don't have a widescreen monitor yet, but when I get one, this would be a product I would purchase!

You can try a free app called Sizer that allows you to set the size and location of windows to whatever you want.Link ZMover is a shareware app that may do what you want as well.

@ j dott
Those apps look interesting
ZMover is here http://www.basta.com/ProdZMover.htm

Does Sizer retain the settings assigned for various windows? It looks like ZMover can save the settings & the user can even copy the layout to oher PCs...

Hmmm ... that sizer program comes close to being a useful app in terms of what I want, by setting up custom resolutions of half the widescreen resolution it could be quite effective, but there is still a little bit of manual shuffling of windows into place even after you have resized them, it's a neat little work around but doesn't quite go the whole hog and address the entire problem ... but a nice start nonetheless.

ZMover also looks useful and again goes some way to addressing the issue, but I just feel that my idea is a little more elegant and removes the need for remembering window positions ... you simply move a window one side or the other of the central divide and then maximise

Thanks for all the replies .... keep 'em coming

Sizer can set location as well as size. It's kind of a pain, but I use it to basically set up blocks of space and send the relevant app to each space.

aimzz-sizer doesn't automatically assign size and location to windows of certain types (the way that ZMover does), but I actually think that this is more useful because I don't really use most apps the same way every time, so I can assign a size and location depending on how I'm using it (and what other apps I'm using).

There is definitely space for another app, but I've spent a lot of time looking and haven't really found anything. I would actually like to see the ability to set window size and location in keyboard launchpad so that I could simply assign different shortcut combinations to apps depending on how they will be used (and have the further ability to launch sets of apps with their proper sizes and locations).

I have discovered that my Matrox Parhelia card has an option very similar to my original idea, they call it 'Desktop divider' and you can split a large desktop into several evenly spaced sections and windows will maximise into whichever section you are in.
