My most beloved sports teams are?

In the opposite vein of my last article, how about using the space below to tell me what your most beloved sports team (or teams) is (or are).

Again, if possible, expound on your selection a bit, and tell me why you favor that (or those) team(s).

Easy reply here: The Washington Redskins (NFL). I'll occassionally acknowledge being a fan of the Baltimore Ravens, but just haven't learned to love them as much as I always was a fan of the old Baltimore Colts. When Mr. Mayflower van lines, I mean Irsay, moved the Colts from Baltimore, it ruined me for cheering for any Baltimore football team for a long time. Even when a team was brought back, I was left sad knowing that one of my favorite Aunt and Uncle's favorite (local) team was gone, through no fault of their own. They saw the same sadness as the old Cleveland Browns left town, and it left me unable to cheer the newly named Ravens when they came to town. Once Cleveland got a team back, I relaxed more, and let myself enjoy the Ravens run to the Superbowl championship that they took back in the late 1990s.

In baseball, I'm forming a great relationship with the Washington Nationals. It's great to have a team in D.C. again, as I have virtually no memory of a team there back in the 1970s. I would be happy to be a fan of the Baltimore Orioles again, but I refuse to acknowledge them until they lose the idiot that they have as an owner, or until he gets a lot smarter about letting good baseball people run his team.

In college sports, do I really have to say it? Go Terps baby!

Hockey? Do they still play that game? I had forgotten all about them after they locked out the league. Actually, that saddens me, since the Capitals do have a great rookie player right now, Alex Ovetchkin (spelling?). I would like to become a fan of Hockey again, especially the Caps, but with the Caps acting like a very poor market/small market team, and spending almost no money to improve the team, it may be a while before I spend even a thought on them.

Pro basketball? Eh. If pressed, I'd say I like the Wizards, but I really don't care about them or any other pro team. Thanks to guaranteed contracts, a hard salary cap, and a long streak of poor (bad) teams in D.C., pro hoops has been nothing more than an occassional thought for me.

Thats my list. Feel free to slam it down, but be prepared to get your own favorites slammed back.

Football - Raiders!  No explanation needed.

Baseball - Mets!  When I was a kid, all my friends were Yankee Fans.  I had to be different!

Basketball - LA Lakers!  I loved it when Kareem, Magic, Worthy and Scott were a team.  They made the pro game fun again!  Plus I have been a Magic Fan since MSU beat ISU!

Forget Hockey.  I dont care if they are playing.

College:

Football: USC!  My mother has always been a Notre Dame fan, and she made me root for USC in the Annual USC-ND game.

Basketball: UCLA - I lived out there during the Wooden years!

Pro Football: My favorite team of all sports the Pittsburgh Steelers.

College Football: Michigan Wolverines. Grew up with a my father, my uncles and my cousins being Ohio State fans. Michigan was an easy choice. All those Ohio State fans are Cleveland Browns fans too. Damn no wonder I love the Steelers.

Pro Basketball: the Boston Celtics. Larry Bird is my fave of all-time. I still root for the Celtics. I got my Celtic shirts and my hats. Hey I know they suck. From Rick Pitino to Danny Ainge no one can right the ship. Years of sorry picks drafting too. But hey they're still my team.

College Basketball: I've always liked Michigan but my absolutely favorite teams are whoever are playing Duke. Now you can see why I have a special place inside for your beloved Terps.

Baseball: the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Even though Yankees win way more I definitely have more affection for the Pirates. All my jerseys and caps go well with my Steeler stuff too.

Hockey: the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. I hbope the Wings win another Stanley Cup. Who cares about the President's Cup? I sure wish Mario Lemieux would've played the whole season with Sidney Crosby. Crosby might've be able to won the Rookie of the Year over Alex Ovechkin.

There is only one team in one sport where I am a truly rabid fan. That is the Seattle Mariners.

See, I wound up moving to Tacoma Washington through an extremely unusual and unlikely set of circumstances in 1988. The Mariners at that time had never had a single winning season, and had only a few sparse claims to fame: the team where Gaylord Perry picked up his 300th win, Alvin Davis as the team's first Rookie of the Year in 1986, and Mark Langston, the team's ace fireballer who would be traded away in a then controversial trade for a young gun with questionable control named Randy Johnson.

The Mariners picked up Jay Buhner by trading away Ken Phelps (presumably after a bong hit by the Boss...Buhner for PHELPS? But we got the better end of that trade, so, hey), and a young shortstop with a weak bat but some of the most incredible fielding skills you ever saw (Omar Vizquel), that would help the M's build into a solid team.

The first major league baseball game I ever attended was on August 31, 1990...a historical moment in baseball as it was the first time in the history of the game a father and son would play together on the same field in a Major League Baseball game. As a frequent visitor to the Tacoma Tigers games (then Oakland A's AAA affiliate, now the M's AAA squad), I had met many of the young players on the team when visiting Calgary (then the M's AAA squad) came to play.

While my first game was under the concrete sky of one of the awfulest sports stadiums ever built (the Kingdome), it didn't change the fact that I was watching the team with which I will always identify.

My loyalty to the team received a nice boost in 1995, when, as a new parent (with a daughter appropriately and entirely coincidentally named "Destiny", I watched my M's mount an improbable comeback for their first ever playoff appearance. Although they have never won a World Series, they will ALWAYS be MY team.
